But we should spend a high draft pick on one with this offensive coaching staff (who Fox just announced will all return intact) and a HC who disdains rookie QBs, has never developed one, and resisted drafting Cam Newton when he was HC at Carolina in favor of trying to make Jimmy Clausen better?
That stance got him fired and also gives us some idea of Fox ability to judge QB talent. Hell we'd be better off just keeping Cutler then.
Or running back talent. Or...
Man, I just do not get all this unwillingness to take the time to compile some facts to base judgments on. This shoot from the hip "don't confuse me with facts my mind's made up" amazes me.
The interesting thing to me is that physically Garoppolo is very close to Cutler is size and athleticism, has a better arm than most, and stylistically does what guys like Ric claim Cutler doesn't. He has great pocket awareness and skills, can sell play action, reads well, makes a decision, and unloads without wind up and a very quick release. We could almost be describing Aaron Rodgers here with those similarities and still some look for excuses not to want to even make an attempt to get the guy.
Is this the same bunch who would have objected to trading a 2nd to Hotlanta for Favre as well?
Don't know if you caught it yet but John Fox took the time to inform of us of his own retention and that of his staff today a full week before the official presser. (Shaking my head here)
Since I don't want to step on this poll with another let me just throw something out there for thought. Respond if you like or don't but at least think on it.
In any discussion or debate we have to accept certain parameters or there's no focus. For example; Simply asking someone would you buy this __________ isn't gonna work unless we know what ________ is and the asking price. If some asks me if I'd pay $1000 for a guitar I might say yes or no depending on the guitar but I have to know that first and know that's authentic and what it's represented to be.
So lets try this.
If we can accept that this is not a great QB crop we're looking at and there may well not be a day one starter among the top three, yet all three may go within the first 20 picks, what would you all say if we picked after that. Say #21? That's about equal to the point value of the Bradford trade and what Schefter reported as a floor for a Garoppolo trade and we'll use that as his stipulated market value.
We have Cutler, Barkley and Shaw under contract and Hoyer is still unsigned and a FA. It's day one of the draft and all three top QBs are off the board. So we're looking at guys who are the 3rd or maybe 4th best position players at spots where we can use help for our pick vs spending that #21 pick on Garoppolo and we've determined he's better than any other QB in this draft we could take later.
We have some trade interest for Cutler but Pace won't commit unless he can obtain a vet starter and he prefers Garopplo to re-signing Hoyer. Do you send that #21 pick to NE for Garoppolo and make him your starter or do you pass, stick with Cutler, and use a later pick on a QB? Or do you go ahead and trade Cutler anyway and re-sign Hoyer hoping you'll get one starter out of the four you take to camp?
Comparing any young QBs now to the QBs that were in the NFL back when Favre was young is a bad idea. QBs coming out of college were much different than the QBs coming out of college now. It seems very few are prepared for the NFL. I know this might help the argument for Garropolo because he would have more experience but it's in a favorable system for him. Not only do we not know how well he would do in the Bear's system he would also cost more than one draft pick and most likely require a fairy sizable long term contract.
I think I'd rather the Bear's try drafting their own QB this time.
One other point to ponder here. Garoppolo's contract ends after this next season. If the Bears have the butt-ugly season that most foresee, and we still have the dysfunctional organization - and some iffy coaching - Garoppolo can run from this franchise like his underwear is on fire. He will be able to go anywhere he wants, that has a need for a QB.
I have my doubts he'd stay here with The Logg and the others here in this land of misfit toys. And some have said he might insist on a new contract to come here. I honestly doubt that he would want to tie himself down here in Chicago - the place where quarterbacks come to die - when he can walk away a free man after 2017.
A draftee on the other hand is ours for an extended contract while we rebuild the franchise - including beyond the firing of the existing coaching staff after 2017 season.
This decision is not as black-and-white as some think it is. Fox isn't Belichick. The Bears offense is not New England. We are not a super bowl quality team like the Pats. I'm not sure I'd like to see us mortgage the farm for a QB that Belichick is willing to jettison either.
Can't you just see us giving up a ton for a QB who comes here and is not even as good as Jay Cutler? I can.
I don't trust Pace to decide what a QBs true worth is. We need a guy with a proven track record on #nailingit when it comes to knowing what to pay a QB. Bring back Emery as a consultant.

Pace is Mudd7 you don't trust him.
Good. Hopefully he understands what it means and can explain it to all of us that don't speak HEHATEME
