Okay, are you telling me all the blockers are just going to stay there on the 35 yard line AFTER the receiver catches the ball on the 5 yard line? How’s that supposed to work?
My outside speed guys will block their outside speed guys. My “fatties” will engage their inside lightweight speed guys around the 25-30. Especially the tackles are skilled at kicking back a few steps and setting the anchor. They do it all the time against pass rushers.
Butkus: I have read and understand the rules.
You clearly don't.
I understand that when the receiver catches the ball on the 5 yard line, his blockers are mostly on the 35. Ergo, he is 30 yards from his blockers. That’s a problem.
What is YOUR plan for the return team, since you don’t like mine.
That’s not the point. I want the kick to drop like a stuck pitching wedge on the 5/yd line so it doesn’t get into the endzone.
The kick returner is coming forward while the OL is dropping back. If they are 30 yards apart, that doesn’t work from a blocking standpoint.
If a returner catches the ball at the 5 yd line then he will be 30 yards from most of his teammates when he takes off. 7 have to be lined up on the 35, while only two (three if there's only one returner) can be closer to the 30. I don't think a football version of the Flying V is going to work.
“Payton says he expects the blocking units for return teams to get bigger because they'll have to cover less distance on the field. He expects there to be double-digit return touchdowns this season.”
Sean Payton agrees with me about putting the big boys on the field. But what does he know about football?

LOL...I don't have one...it's not my job to figure it out! My thought is it will look a little similar to what a punt return team looks like, but the corners/receivers who block the gunners on punt would be replaced by linebacker/running back/full back types with tight ends and defensive lineman and the two returnmen making up the rest of the return team.

I essentially said that. I said there would be more defensive line/linebacker types on the field. So apparently he agrees with me too, since he never specified which "bigger guys" they would be! LOL

You can read English Right? It says "blocking units for the return team to get bigger". You two guys have been telling me I am nuts for suggesting what he is talking about.
Nothing new about putting linebackers on kick coverage. You don't have enough WR on the roster to use onlly RBs and WRs to cover kicks. You might see some reserve DE's on kickoffs. This is going to be interesting to see how teams adapt to these rules.

+1 I think it's gonna be fascinating to see which teams can leverage this to an advantage, and which teams can't.
I have been watching some UFL games to get an idea how it might work in the NFL. One of the differences is that many NFL kickers have the leg power to just bomb it into the end zone and bring it out to the 20, but it has to hit outside and roll in. So it could still be boring unless the kicking teams have a good chance to pin the receiving team inside the 20 or is satisfied to start on the 35 to avoid risking a long return.

LOL...well seeing as how I'm not the one who had trouble with the rule of the play...yeah, I can read English. As I said...he never specified WHICH bigger guys they would be. You said you'd put o-lineman out there. Did he say there were going to be o-lineman out there? Again...I said there would be defensive ends/edges who will take the place of corner types on coverage units. I also said if you put offensive lineman out there I would destroy them with my speed guys.

I understand the rules. This is just a red herring that you keep injecting.
He didn’t specify OL, but I don’t doubt that is what he’s talking about. You want big guys on the front7 at the 35 to be offensive linemen, not defensive linemen. Offensive linemen are trained and paid to BLOCK. It would be stupid as hell to ask DL or LB to do much blocking. I am sure you know that, and now you’re just grasping at straws to keep arguing.
