The defense also has the same amount of distance to build up speed. Hang time won't give you any advantage as NEITHER team can move until the ball has either A. been caught by the returner, or B. Hit the ground. You are right in that I think we'll see some creative plays coming from the new set up.
That’s not the point. I want the kick to drop like a stuck pitching wedge on the 5/yd line so it doesn’t get into the endzone.
The kick returner is coming forward while the OL is dropping back. If they are 30 yards apart, that doesn’t work from a blocking standpoint.
If a returner catches the ball at the 5 yd line then he will be 30 yards from most of his teammates when he takes off. 7 have to be lined up on the 35, while only two (three if there's only one returner) can be closer to the 30. I don't think a football version of the Flying V is going to work.

Having all his blockers standing still on the 35 is the worst thing I can imagine. They need to drop back 5-10 yards while the returner gets to the 20-yd line ASAP to get closer to his blockers.

And I think that's what butkus is trying to say. The big boys would essentially have to backpeddle 15 yards before the speedier guys on the defensive side blow right past them to blow up the returner. Not to mention, you almost have to predict where the kicker is going to try to land the ball. If you set your linemen up in the middle then a kick to the left or right has them out of position to effectively block. No doubt, it'll be fun to see how teams deal with the new rules, but not sure the linemen option is a good one.

I can’t understand why we can’t seem to communicate on this. It is totally useless to have your blockers standing still on the 35 after the receiver catches the ball on the 5 yard line. Can we agree on that much?
I already said I am putting 2 speed guys on the outside to deal with what butkus is talking about. Their job is to stop anybody from looping around — forcing opponents toward the middle of the field. The OL should be at the 25 when the returner reaches the 20. At that point, their job is to open a hole.

It's the WHOLE point. You're not getting it. NOBODY CAN MOVE until the ball is caught or it hits the ground. If it hangs up forever the returner will have time to run under it and catch it...AT THAT POINT the blockers and defenders can now start moving. Literally NOTHING can happen...and I mean NOTHING as far as movement goes, until the returner catches it or it hits the ground.

They literally cannot do that. I don't know how many other ways I can make this clear. Nobody can move until the returner has caught the ball or the ball has hit the ground.

We can't seem to communicate because for some reason you're not understanding the rules that I've stated numerous times. At this point I'll just provide the link to the rule...maybe the NFL can communicate it better than me.
Or maybe this video will help? The returner catches the ball on the 5 yard line. His blockers can only drop about 5 yards before they have to engage the kicking team. There’s no time for a bunch of fatties to do what you’re suggesting David.

Okay, are you telling me all the blockers are just going to stay there on the 35 yard line AFTER the receiver catches the ball on the 5 yard line? How’s that supposed to work?
My outside speed guys will block their outside speed guys. My “fatties” will engage their inside lightweight speed guys around the 25-30. Especially the tackles are skilled at kicking back a few steps and setting the anchor. They do it all the time against pass rushers.
