According to spotrac Hendrickson has a cap charge of $20mil this season and $18m next season. Bears would need to be able to deal with both those years. I don't know if Cinny can be persuaded to take some of those hits or even if that is possible. I'm not a cap guy. riczaj01 might know, he knows more about the cap than most others.
I might change my mind here (flip-flop) and say....maybe. It all depends on cap issues.
I know what spotrac and other sites tell me. I'm no expert by any means =).
I wouldn't give up any future trade capital this year. Don't believe anyone that says the Bears window is open now, it's not. Might be next year based on how CWill and Odunze and the OL perform, but that window is firmly shut and locked until next offseason.
Never say never, but I don't think Hendrickson is going to get moved until the trade deadline IF he gets traded. (yes some team could make an offer the Bengals can't refuse....yeah yeah yeah). I'd wait to see where the Bears are before making a trade.
4-4 and worse? I'm holding on to the pick 5-3 or better? I'm thinking hard about making the trade IF its still on the table.
With the new rules you need two guys back to return kicks. You don't just want someone who "won't fumble"...you want someone who will be dangerous and impact the way the other team approaches the play. But ok...you cut Homer and Jones...you cleared another $2.7 mill...only $10 mill more before you have Hendricksons contract for this year covered without impacting our ability to do anything else. Don't forget a lot of these guys will need to play special teams...unless you want Hendrickson to do that too...
Gale Sayers ran back kicks. If you really want to capitalize on new rules, why not have better players do it? There is risk of injury on every play in football, but I thought the idea of the new rules is to have kick returns without as much injury risk. I would not be too surprised if some teams try it.
Why did Gale Sayers retire after 7 seasons again?
The new rules are meant to reduce concussions by having the tacklers and blockers line up closer to each other and take out the 30 yard sprints guys get before they make contact with someone. All of the other injury risk still applies.

The only thing Cincy gets hit with is the signing bonus cap charge. The rest all goes to the Bears, which would be a little over $15 mill this year. The only way Cincy would take on some of the money is if the Bears gave back better draft capital. So now we're talking about going from a 2nd for him to a first...or multiple 2's or a 2 and a 3...something like that.

That is a huge difference. Gale was never injured on a kick return. He never completely recovered from his knee surgery. It wasn’t for concussions, although his dementia was probably caused by brain damage.
It will be interesting to see how many kick returners are injured with the new rules. If they aren’t getting injured much, I think (some) teams will start putting their best players in there to maximize field positions. In big games and playoffs, a guy like Hill might beg the coach to let him do the kickoff returns. Watch for it.

Yeah, the more I think of it, this doesn't sound like a good deal for where the Bears are at right now in their rebuild. That's close to $40-million dollars there for 3rd round pick Hendrickson - I'd rather the Bears drafted their own guy next year and have an ascending young player on a rookie contract instead of a guy who will be 30 years old this year, with a $40-million dollar cap hit. We have all been talking about how the team would not be able to get everything this year, and some needs have to be pushed to 2025. I'm thinking this is one.
We should also maximize our window with these rookie contracts from Williams and Rome. We're saving 70 million. You don't get this chance that often.

We do that every time we draft a rookie. Not sure what you mean. Every draft we draft and we have new rookie contracts

+1 And I'd add that we also have the opportunity to draft a younger version of Hendrickson, on one of those rookie contracts, in the next draft. I have to believe we will see the defense get more attention in 2025. I'm sure hoping we are not building for a 1-year 2024 SB run (obviously not happening), but rather building for sustained success that spans a longer time period. Some people say a rookie will take time to be effective. But while a great D player should get better and better after that rookie season, there have been a number of DL guys who were great their rookie season (All Pro even... LOL, I Googled it). A great DL rookie can be a great asset year-1. Poles has made some really good picks to help the offense this year. Next year it's the D's turn to get some love. Why spend big money at this point, or give up our future draft picks? Use them ourselves. JMO.

Perhaps...but it potentially reduces their impact for the upcoming offensive series. If Hill, for example, busts out a good return he's coming off the field for a play or two to recover from the max speed sprint he just performed. Now you can't use that guy offensively...or he's on the field, but not able to run as fast as he potentially could because he's not fully recovered.
As for Sayers...the most kick returns he ever had in a season was 23 in his second season. It wasn't like he did it all the time.
