But they aren't betting the house. Most likely, Dexter is just a JAG, no better and no worse than Jones. He's younger and makes less, both important. There is a chance Dexter is worse and a chance he's better. Basically, looking at replacing a JAG with another JAG. I also don't think we know if Dexter is a long term replacement. But Jones for sure wasn't a long term fixture on the DL.
Jones is the type of player a team has to be willing to let go because they can get younger, cheaper and maybe better with the replacement. Jones isn't Donald or one of the infinite DL-men the Eagles have apparently who will all go to live in Valhalla one day. He's not the kind of player they should keep running out there. He's replaceable.
Do I know this for sure? No. Is it a change I would take? Yes.
Well, we are about to find out.
22 days, 2 hours, 51 minutes and 31.489573 seconds. But who's counting?
Yeah for me Bowers isn't in that same category. He's whatever is one step down from "blue chip" (BC).
To me, BC is A) premium position, B) high ceiling and, C) HIGH FLOOR. I admit, I strongly favor HIGH FLOOR players high in the draft. To me that extra layer of bust protection is well worth the cost of not getting an extra 3rd rounder on a trade-down.
Alt, Turner, and Odunze are BCs to me. All play premium positions, have elite potential, and all are low-bust-risk. IOW, even if they don't full reach their ceiling, they are likely to still be good players and solid starters.
I just viscerally despise shooting for the moon in the early draft and missing which is why I was happy with Darnell Wright over Jalen Carter last draft. You are kinda stuck at QB cuz its so binary with that position but everywhere else I always favor the higher floor option(s).
I guess that would be a red chip player. Unless blue means Light Blue, but then why not grab a Brown Chip?
(I know, poker chips are different than sports...)
Hell no. Poles will get that "Brown Chip" mixed up with something else and we get a crap player.
We lost our backup 3T who was a JAG. Maybe a JAG+ after Sweat showed up.
Dexter will be our starter and we just need to sign or draft a backup.
And you don't see Dexter as a JAG?
Jones has been in the league 6 years. Dex has played only 1 and only maybe just 1/2 season as a front line guy. Think its safe to say Dexter has way more potential upside. Also have Pickens who also was a rookie last year. You're counting on growth and development from the young players you just drafted.

+1,000
I think us fans sometimes fail to appreciate how rookies develop. It is a process of becoming better. But we sometimes think that what we see that first season is the ceiling - rather than understanding that we are seeing the floor. We drafted 10 rookies last year. For that matter we drafted 11 the year before... and there are still ascending guys from that class (Braxton Jones is just one of them). So we have a lot of young people who should be better players this year (from those 21 drafted players the two previous seasons).

no, all true. But normally you can tell when a guy will be a really good player. Not always, so maybe he will surprise me.

Dex started slow and finished the year strong. I dunno how he will turn out but the trajectory looks positive.
