Regarding the running game importance, I don't think it is so much about the yardage totals that matters most. Although you do want a healthy balance. But what I like to see is a team that CAN run the ball as needed. What I mean is that it is a legit effective weapon when you need to move the chains in short yardage situations, or you're on that 1-yard line and nee to punch the ball in for a score... and in general the opposing defense has to respect that you CAN run anytime effectively. That is a bit different than just stacking a ton of run yards a season. To me it is anyway.
That is the kind of RB likes as well. The one that pounds it and refuses to go down.
And we DO have guys who can break some long runs too. I think (maybe) one reason Monty was let go is that he did not have that high gear to kick in speed-wise. Swift seems to have a bit more of a speed gear.
Sorry, that isn't "balanced". That's 3:1 passing minimum.
Regardless, my larger point is that the Bears under Poles need to turn the page on their prior ways. I'm sick of "running the ball and playing good defense". That sounds really nice but doesn't win enough. We have been doing that for decades. It hasn't worked.
Most SBs are won by teams that excel at passing. Way more than those that "are balanced".
Well, we lost our 3T and only have one good DE, I don't think we need to worry about playing good defense. I'm not sure we can right now
Adequate defense is fine by me as long as we have a real passing attack. And btw, Bears D was top-10 in the second half of last season.
Having said that, my best hope is that Odunze reaches us. If so, yes you take him without looking back.
The Bears have sucked for decades not only at drafting QBs, but also at drafting WRs. Alshon Jeffery has been the best WR we have drafted in 20 years and he was only good for a couple seasons. It's no wonder why we suck so bad at pass offense.
I have heard rumors recently that the Giants might like Odunze over Nabors. Long shot but I would love to get Nabors.
We lost our backup 3T who was a JAG. Maybe a JAG+ after Sweat showed up.
Dexter will be our starter and we just need to sign or draft a backup.
And you don't see Dexter as a JAG?
I can't answer for mpbears68, but Dexter didn't play full time last season. I commented several times that both Dexter and Pickens needed to be playing more so the Bears could figure out what they had exactly. If Dexter is just a JAG, then they haven't lost anything by depending on Dexter to step in for Jones. You always try to replace JAGs.
I find it funny that Jones, just a JAG, is suddenly transformed into this DL piece that they will regret letting go. His signing was considered the worst in FA this year. Massive overpay for the projected return. I have no doubt Dexter can step in and take his slot.
(Just to be fair either Jahns or Hoge reported that Dexter was a disappointed to the staff last season, so there is that.)

Dexter did play better at the end of the season, but not sure he is the long term solution. Of course, I hope he is, but would not bet my house on it

But they aren't betting the house. Most likely, Dexter is just a JAG, no better and no worse than Jones. He's younger and makes less, both important. There is a chance Dexter is worse and a chance he's better. Basically, looking at replacing a JAG with another JAG. I also don't think we know if Dexter is a long term replacement. But Jones for sure wasn't a long term fixture on the DL.
Jones is the type of player a team has to be willing to let go because they can get younger, cheaper and maybe better with the replacement. Jones isn't Donald or one of the infinite DL-men the Eagles have apparently who will all go to live in Valhalla one day. He's not the kind of player they should keep running out there. He's replaceable.
Do I know this for sure? No. Is it a change I would take? Yes.
