+1 And it must be a pretty scary situation on one level. They have the opportunity to do something epic good here... something that hasn't happened since Sid Luckman was drafted in the 1939 draft, that was 85 years ago. Think of the magnitude of the moment here. If they get this wrong and the guy they reject goes on to be a star NFL quarterback - for another team other than the Bears - can you imagine how that would dog you? Somehow it feels a lot more epic than the Mahomes whiff and passing on Stroud. And what if Fields is let go and HE goes on to be a star QB for another team for the next decade or so? (don't say it can't happen... this is the Bears where epic mistakes and bad things happen).
Get this right and you are revered here in Chicago - and with Bears fans worldwide - forever. Get it wrong and, well it isn't a "good thing" to have happen for sure :-)
If they keep Fields and draft Harrison, I can live with it, because that’s what I wanted. I can’t blame Poles for doing what I wanted!
But if the Bears become the Dallas Cowboys with Williams, and Fields wins a Super Bowl with the Falcons, that’s the scenario I worry about.
Do you trust this franchise to develop a WR to an elite one? We failed everyone. We have a worst record at WR than we do at QB. It maybe better going after the QB because this franchise can't and won't develop a HoF talent like Harrison.

Franchises dont develop players. Coaches do. And if im not mistaken, we just got a new O batch. So, I dont get your point.
Van Pram is my #1 favorite center in this year's draft. Yes, I'm "more than okay" with that, David.
Just for fun, I ran a poll on the Seahawks forum asking who is the best center in this draft. 26 votes so far and Powers-Johnson has 65% of the votes. He has 17 votes and Van Pran has 3. Frazier has zero.
I think a lot of people just "parrot" what the talking-heads tell them to think. It goes beyond just sports. It is especially true with social media and the Internet. Someone puts something out there and other people repeat it. At some point it's "truth" because, well because it's "out there" and "everyone" believes it now. We see a lot of this going on. I personally form my own opinions based on what I see with my own eyes over what "others" think is true. I do read what others say in these cases. But I understand it may, or may not be true.
Regarding Powers-Johnson, I do believe he is a fantastic C in this draft. No question. And I would be THRILLED if the Bears draft him. Is he going to be the best center to come out in the 2024 draft? Maybe. But I do like 3 or 4 others. I think one or more of them COULD be better at the NFL level. And regardless, of who ends up as best, a few years down the road, I do believe these guys are in the same talent-tier, the top tier in this year's draft. There is minimal drop-off in talent (this year) at the top. It is a fantastic draft for centers. At least I think so. If the Bears get any of these top centers in THIS year's draft then I'm going to be really pleased, David. I just hope the Bears do draft one, even if they also sign a FA center. Nothing wrong with getting 2 centers on board this year.

I figure that I am not going to let past history, under past franchise leadership, form my opinion of the present leadership - and what they can accomplish now. And really, if we live in the past, then why even follow the Chicago Bears? Right?

As I said before, I have not studied all these guys, but I have seen Powers-Johnson. I do believe he is worthy of a late first or early second round pick. We could trade down from #9 to around #18 and still have a good chance to get him. He can also play guard, so he and the guy we get in the draft could end up as starters replacing Patrick and Davis. The question I keep asking is, assuming we are using #9 for “max QB support” for Williams, which option adds the most to the Bears offense:
1. Powers-Johnson plus a picked obtained in the trade down. 2. Best WR on the board if Harrison, Nabers, Odunze are gone already at #9.

I think there is low chance there isnt Harrison, Nabers, Odunze or Bowers at 9. One should be there. And we take him.

My hope is that the #9 pick is a WR, and it is one of the big-3 guys. If all three are gone then I would be fine with that trade down for the best C in the draft at around that #17 or #18 area of the first round. We could be in a situation to trade back into the 1st round if Fields ends up getting us a fairly high 2nd round pick. And also (I know it is a long shot) we could trade down 1 position with the Commanders and get Maye and also get one of their 2nd round picks (#32 or #40). There are a lot of ways Poles could play his draft cards in this draft. He is holding some good cards right now, especially considering the Fields wild card play. We could end (with a trade up) to have 3 first round picks this year.

I'm using the same logic people use when it comes to us drafting a QB.

I think the point is that coaches develop the players, but there is a wider scope of resources for evaluating and acquiring the players to begin with. In the Bears' case it would be the franchise scouting department, the "Big Three" Warren/Poles/Cunningham and some level of input from the coaching staff. Warren seems more hands-on than Ted Philips was, so while I don't think he makes final decisions, I do believe he is part of the football ops. Final "say" would be with Poles on most player acquisitions. The one exception would be with acquiring/trading the QB1. I could even see ownership on most (if not all) franchises being at least kept in the loop on that one. As an owner I figure that is the one area you do have veto power.
