Can't read the article, but yeah, that's what I think will happen also. A LOT of this is making sure you have a job next year. Now if they pick a new guy and it doesn't work and JF blows it out somewhere else, that could be a problem for someone. Or a few someones.
Sure, I don't disagree.
It would be even a bigger problem if Poles passed on CW at #1 after passing on Stroud at #1 last year and Fields DIDN'T magically light it up in year 4. That would be career suicide.
And the next Bears QB that goes on to stardom somewhere else will be the first. I don't think Poles is too worried about that. Mid-tier QB at best, that's his ceiling.
I am being honest. He didn't magically "forget" how to hit those jaw-dropping long passes. He was lethal-accurate and throws a beautiful ball few can emulate. That is still "there" but to do that you need a baseline of talent on the team that the Bears simply have not provided. I do believe the addition of a solid offensive coordinator, along with a (finally) fixed OL, and an upgrade in the WR room - will unlock the potential we all hoped Fields would bring here.
It won't happen because Fields will be gone. I'm still grateful the upgrades will be in place for the next QB though. These are things the Bears should have had here years ago... I think we all can agree on that one.
I understand your points and you may be right and I may be wrong, MP. But I am being honest about how I see it. I do wish the guy success at his next stop. And I sure don't understand why anyone would hate on Fields and call him "trash" and hate on the guy. Worst case he is just a young man who did his best here... it's not like he wanted to fail here, right?
Fields biggest positives are his character and temperament. He's a rock solid guy and easy to root for. I get that. I wanted him to break out this year so badly. So I understand why many want him to get one more year.
He isn't a "trash" player and certainly not as a person. I fully acknowledge it and like him for that (heck, I bought his jersey last offseason) but yet I can't deny how disappointed I also am by his play. He just wasn't good in 2023 and he really needed to be good in critical year 3 for him.
Left wondering how many "deep shots" a team takes on average per game. I'm gonna guess its 5 or less. Most passes aren't 40+ yard bombs and he just hasn't been good enough at those. At the "routine" part of being an NFL QB.
I just don't see how Poles can stick with him going forward given the situation at hand. It's been too much projection and too little production unfortunately for me.
PS: The fan base LOVES him for his character and understandably so. I do think it causes people to overlook his flaws too much though. Believe me, I wanted him to become "the guy" as much as anyone.
That seems pretty accurate. I think that's why we are so sad about him not making it here. I keep thinking it isn't like the guy didn't try his best like some draftees do who don't put in the work to get better. Fields falls into that category of people who gave it everything but the play just hasn't been what we'd like to see. I do believe the Bears will draft a guy and I'll root for him just like I have the past quarterbacks here. I do feel very positive about the new guy landing in a better situation than most of the past QBs here. I could be wrong, but I'm very optimistic about the coaching and players we will have for this 2024 season.

Yeah. I agree. And I think that is definitely one lane they are looking at. They look at pretty much all options (they normally don't pick the right one, but that's another story). I still think it is going to comer down to what they get offered for the first pick. I think these new guys have a shot at getting Fields back on track. But the safe "keep your job" bet is always to go with a new QB

Maybe they simply need to not overthink it and just evaluate who the best QB is and go with that guy... if they get it wrong they get it wrong. And work with Waldron on this too. Don't make him work with Fields if Fields isn't the BEST option for success - yes, I get it that coaches need to adapt to the players they have. But in this situation the Bears don't HAVE to stick with Fields. They have the #1 pick and can draft any QB they want. This doesn't mean Waldron controls what happens, but simply factor in his input. Maye could be an awesome option for a team that really WANTS an accurate, strong armed pocket passer. Or, maybe Caleb it the best match. But this time I hope we get away from forcing a QB on an offense that may not be optimized for the guy. Now if we didn't have that #1 pick, then yeah, maybe you have to adjust the offense to fit a guy... but we don't HAVE to do that this time. Let's get this offense jinx buried for good here in Chicago. Whatever it takes, just get it done. That's why, even though I really really like Justin Fields, I won't quibble over drafting a guy and trading Fields. If that is what the coaches and Poles truly believe is best here.

JABF, as long as whatever they do brings success, I don't care. I just want to get going on winning in the postseason

Yeah, I totally agree. And the Bears are tasked with MORE than just getting better. They have to overtake Green Bay and the Lions who are already better now - and both are ascending franchises. Poles, the coaches and players have a lot of "catching up" to do, and then surpass these two teams.

I really didn't care for the decision to stick with Flus at HC and thought is was probably a McCaskey/Teddy cheap-out move.
Beyond that, I am impressed with how they have filled out the rest of the staff since then. Particularly on the offensive side which as we all know has been a huge problem for way too long. From the OC on down they have brought in more experienced and better qualified people than they have had in a while. [CHGO just did a nice breakdown on that if you're interested.]
I believe the reason they have been able to attract better candidates this time is these guys see opportunities for career advancement in Chicago with the #1 pick in hand. These coaches see themselves getting Caleb, building a more successful offense, and getting promotions and HC opportunities in a year or two.
I have been very critical of the Bears failures as an organization when it comes to properly aligning its major figures. Except for Flus, it appears this time they have done it much better. They have assembled a new (90% new anyway) offensive coaching staff to be tied to a new QB who wasn't drafted by a previous GM.
There's reason to hope that maybe just maybe this time they will finally hit on a QB and have a competent NFL passing offense for once.

I've said before that Eberflus was not the guy I'd like to see as the Bears HC but he's here. He gets a lot of flack for the bad coordinator hires when he first arrived here as a rookie HC. If his hires this time around prove to be solid then he should get credit for doing that. And if he proves to be a solid winning HC here then he is good in my book. Credit where credit is due. Of course he has to prove he can be that guy who wins here.

Ryan Poles said at his presser that he was gonna "be involved" in the process. I translate that to mean that Poles and Warren were leading the effort. I doubt Flus had much influence at all with the O-staff and maybe only some with the DC hire. He had no connections on the O-side of the ball to rely upon and his former DC was bounced outta here early in the season.
BTW, Luke Getsy has been getting plenty of interviews and has a 2nd interview coming up with New Orleans I believe. Been reported that he is "widely respected" around the league. I mention this because there are a lot of delusional Bears fans who want to blame all of Fields' struggles and bad numbers on the OC.
