I've watched and read much of HH's stuff. He's a total diehard Fields-fanboy. His reasoning boils down to bunch of hopes, optimistic projections, and IFs.
IF Fields gets two more good receivers... IF his pass protection is great... IF his OC can figure put how to mask his weaknesses... IF the Bears defense continues to ascend...
I've heard it all a million times. The objective criteria say otherwise. I love the idea that Fields is gonna take the Bears to the SB. That's a good one, a real laugher. He's beaten only two real starting QBs in two years. His two best games were against two terrible defenses. Outside of those two, he's thrown for only 8 TDs in 11 games!
Just this past weekend, the MVP QB of the league and a great defense couldn't make it to the SB. And neither could a QB who's production in yards and TDs is nearly DOUBLE that of Justin (4700 yards vs 2500, 29 TDs vs 16).
But yeah, Fields is gonna take us all the way.
Sure he is......
Have you ever wondered why it keeps being said?
Not really
Fans hang on emotionally to players they invested a lot of hope and time in. Its natural but illogical.
And it's exactly the same type of defense I see on social media when people criticize Caleb Williams for his poor performance against ranked teams. That as the first thing that led me to become a bit skeptical and critical of Williams.
I am not going to criticize Williams. He might be the ticket to a SB. I personally am not sure he is going to be any better than Fields, and certainly don't think he would have survived physically as well after all the hits Fields took. And if we fix the line so that Williams will get hit less, that will also benefit Fields. I just want the team to win. If a different QB gets us there, that's great. I am not invested in Fields other than I think we can win with him.

If Poles has decided or decides in the near future that we need to replace Fields, this is why I really hope he ranks one of the QB prospects not named Caleb as the #1 QB in the draft. That way we could possibly trade down 1 or 2 draft positions, still get MHJ and then have the ability to get a QB as well as OC, DL, etc.

Yeah, I like that option but only if we go after the QB we really want. I don't want to go with a "budget" choice so that we can get more picks. If we are going after a QB, we have the first pick. Take the one we want and let's not play games or try and figure out who takes what and if our guy will still be there at what position. If it is determined JF is not the guy and we need and have identified a franchise QB, we have the first pick. Use it. A franchise QB is worth more than a first pick. It lasts for many years. If we don't get the guy we think can change the franchise because we are trying to play Madden and get a few extra picks, that will piss me off.

That is exactly the scenario that I was talking about. I keep going back to previous drafts where there are really first rate QBs taken in the middle of the 1st round. A couple of the other guys here have talked about how they don't want a "budget" QB. I couldn't agree more.

To be honest, any QB needs those things to play at their best. If we draft a young player then he too will develop and reach his full potential if he has a solid team and coaches, right?
Sure, no one said otherwise.
What do you honestly think Fields ceiling is? Don't get emotional but stay logical and realistic about it. You have watched him a ton I assume. What do you honestly think his ceiling is?
Now, how many more years until he can reach it? One? Two? Five? You only have one season left at this point. Two if you're willing to fork over $23m for his 5th year option.
So that's what this boils down to. If you think his realistic ceiling is high enough and the timeline to get there is short enough, the you want to keep him.
I DON'T think it's high enough. I waited and waited all season to see it and I didn't. And I was very optimistic back on Labor Day that he was going to break out this year.
For me, it's very simple--the QB's ceiling isn't high enough so it's time to move on. You are "building the team" either way.

Honestly, if there is a chance to upgrade the QB position no matter if you drafted your QB a year before you do it. Outside of top 10 QB's in the NFL. Every QB is replaceable to some degree.
Look at the Cardinals.
Drafted Josh Rosen pick 10 overall in 2018. The next year they got the #1 overall pick and drafted Kyle Murray.
A ton of fans would say that was a horrible pick back in 2019 but the Cardinals don't have to look for their franchise QB now. Now its about supporting and fixing the rest of the team. They are 100% getting Harrison unless New England grabs him. Look for Murray to have a breakout season next year.
Fields has nothing really going for him as a passer. Going into year 3. We all said this was do or die time for Fields since we had an extra 1st round pick as insurance. Fields has failed us and Williams has been the biggest prospect since Trevor Lawrence. Having the #1 overall pick and #9 overall pick still allows us to get either an elite WR or elite TE or upgrade the LT position. Williams will have far more support than any drafted Bears QB in recent history.
Then another thing. With Fields you have 2 years before you pay him Jones money while Williams will have 5 years. Rookie contract means better FA signings.

Just judging by his passing at OSU I have to believe his ceiling is a top-5 NFL quarterback... especially when you consider what he has shown as far as his running skills. Like any QB he needs the coaching and players around him to reach his ceiling. Not talking about "perfect" support. I'm thinking the Bears will have the needed level of coach & players to do that this year. I doubt that the Bears keep him,but if they did I believe Waldron would help him get that release time down like he has other QBs, including Geno. That OSU deep ball game (lethal deep ball accuracy) is still there, and once the OL can provide him a pocket to work out of - that will return to what we have seen him do at OSU. He needs a WR to compliment DJ (the new kid will benefit from that too... just as he will from a better OL).
I have zero doubt about Fields' passing skills because I have watched him do the things he needs to do at the NFL level. In fact I have more doubt about these 2024 draft QBs than I do about Fields ability to do these things at the highest level. I have seen that with my own eyes.
I figure the Bears will move on from Fields, and I do understand there are reasons why that may be the best option (money, reset the contract, and maybe another QB's skill set is a better fit for what Waldron wants to do here, and there are other things too). So no worries if the Bears move on from Fields. But just because the Bears do move on, I don't figure we have to believe we have seen Fields' ceiling and as some posters put it, he is "trash" as a player. I will be hoping he does land on a great team and truly does ascend - this guy is not a Trubisky level guy. The talent is there. It just did not work out here... stuff happens... time to move on I guess.

yeah.... I have to say I feel the same way. But what will be will be.
I think we agree on the factors that made it not work out here. But I think the team is correcting them. That is why I hope he will stay, but I think odds are them going for the shiny new toy

I should have clarified and said "NFL ceiling" I guess. His OSU stuff was 4 years ago and a different world. Lots of great NCAA QBs aren't great NFL QBs (Mariota and Winston come to mind recently). OSU is way in the rear view mirror and doesn't really count at this point, let's be honest.
If you truly believe his ceiling is "NFL top-5" like you said, then yeah keeping him is a complete no-brainer for you. If I thought that as well I would also be firmly in the build-around-Justin-camp and want to trade the #1 pick. There's no way Ryan Poles would be moving on from Fields if he also thought he had a top-5 ceiling. They'd be picking up his 5th year option in a heartbeat and maybe even extending him right now.
Obviously I don't think that at all. I don't see the savvy pocket passing skills and fast processing speed that characterizes elite NFL QBs.
Yes, he has incredible athletic talent including elite running ability and a very good arm. Jay Cutler had the latter too. So did a lot of former QBs. We spent many years here trying to "fix Jay" and his slow mental clock to no avail. I still remember Trestman coming here and talking about how he was gonna "speed up Jay". Never happened. Didn't happen in Miami either after Cutler left.
We are gonna have to agree to disagree here. I fell like we should have seen many flashes of "top-5" from Justin by now if he truly had that ceiling and was just being held back by external factors.
