I should have clarified and said "NFL ceiling" I guess. His OSU stuff was 4 years ago and a different world. Lots of great NCAA QBs aren't great NFL QBs (Mariota and Winston come to mind recently). OSU is way in the rear view mirror and doesn't really count at this point, let's be honest.
I am being honest. He didn't magically "forget" how to hit those jaw-dropping long passes. He was lethal-accurate and throws a beautiful ball few can emulate. That is still "there" but to do that you need a baseline of talent on the team that the Bears simply have not provided. I do believe the addition of a solid offensive coordinator, along with a (finally) fixed OL, and an upgrade in the WR room - will unlock the potential we all hoped Fields would bring here.
It won't happen because Fields will be gone. I'm still grateful the upgrades will be in place for the next QB though. These are things the Bears should have had here years ago... I think we all can agree on that one.
I understand your points and you may be right and I may be wrong, MP. But I am being honest about how I see it. I do wish the guy success at his next stop. And I sure don't understand why anyone would hate on Fields and call him "trash" and hate on the guy. Worst case he is just a young man who did his best here... it's not like he wanted to fail here, right?

If Fields shown a bit of promise in 2023. It would be a no brainer to keep him. Trade down with New England, get their 2nd round pick. We draft Harrison. With the #9 overall pick. We go after the best tackle left in the draft. Move Jones to guard. With New England 2nd round pick. We go after the best center.
Fields has not shown he can be a Tier 2 QB in this league. College is college. Playing against the big boys who've been doing it for years is far different. Its a shame too. I was rooting for the guy this year as a turnaround year after getting him a true #1 WR.
At the end of the day. I rather us move on and start fresh while not having another Jay Culter situation on us.
I'm not asking for much. I would love an Mahomes or Allen QB but you give me a QB who can throw for 4k yards, 30+ TDs, get into the Pro Bowl, win us a playoff game, and the ability to start 80+ games. That's something Fields can't do.
Can't read the article, but yeah, that's what I think will happen also. A LOT of this is making sure you have a job next year. Now if they pick a new guy and it doesn't work and JF blows it out somewhere else, that could be a problem for someone. Or a few someones.

Fields biggest positives are his character and temperament. He's a rock solid guy and easy to root for. I get that. I wanted him to break out this year so badly. So I understand why many want him to get one more year.
He isn't a "trash" player and certainly not as a person. I fully acknowledge it and like him for that (heck, I bought his jersey last offseason) but yet I can't deny how disappointed I also am by his play. He just wasn't good in 2023 and he really needed to be good in critical year 3 for him.
Left wondering how many "deep shots" a team takes on average per game. I'm gonna guess its 5 or less. Most passes aren't 40+ yard bombs and he just hasn't been good enough at those. At the "routine" part of being an NFL QB.
I just don't see how Poles can stick with him going forward given the situation at hand. It's been too much projection and too little production unfortunately for me.
PS: The fan base LOVES him for his character and understandably so. I do think it causes people to overlook his flaws too much though. Believe me, I wanted him to become "the guy" as much as anyone.

That is well said and I feel pretty much the same way.
I think what makes the decision so tough for Bear fans, besides the fact we have been playing pin the starter on the QB for decades. Is what the whole Brock Purdy show. "If he can do all that he is doing why can't Fields?" That has to be going through so many minds. It helps to have an incredible stream of Coaching talent that seems to be flowing from the 49ers FO and perhaps we can get that injection as well.
But like you said, Fields seems like a nice kid which makes it much harder to cast him aside. If he was like Manziel he would have been changing the Owners bed pans by now.
What can we all do really? Throw ours hands in the air and wave em like we just don't care........And hope for that water to flow our way and our next QB will be lights out for years to come.

I think this is finally where I've settled. I had been on the fence because Fields has been just flashy enough to be enticing. And like you said, he seems like a really good kid, so it's hard to want to "break up with him". But, he just doesn't seem to be good enough unfortunately. I'm not necessarily sold on Williams (or any other rookie QB), but that route at least seems to bring more hope of seeing a true franchise QB.
