I guess we disagree there. Otherwise, I would also be wanting a new QB :-)
I understand.
If Poles/Warren want to go with the build-around-Fields plan, then they sure as hell better be BUILDING better than Flus & whatever yo-yo newbie he drags in here to be his next failed OC. They need to go all-in on getting a new HC like Harbaugh in here who has done it before and who has the coattails to attract the best subordinate candidates. I am pretty damn sure no hot OC or DC candidates are laying awake at night hoping they get a shot to work for Flus.
To put it simply, if you want to try to fix Fields, then bring in a new staff top-to-bottom that actually has a chance to be successful at it. Don't half-ass it by keeping Flus and say you want "continuity" cuz it isn't continuity at all -- Flus isn't calling plays or developing the QB. Lets get serious here--Flus is a DC and locker room cheerleader. He's not an offensive coach.
Completely agree. But I think Flus is staying. Which I think is a mistake. We will hear soon
That's easy. Keeping Flus is continuity. He stays as the HC another year. I know you know that. You are saying that getting rid of Getsky means that there is selective continuity. Yeah. They do what they want and then backfill the justification to fit. That's how it works. I'd like to see Flus and Getsy both gone and Fields here another year. But that's just me.
I would like to see Fields and Flus gone and Getsy here for another year. Just for shits n giggles
LOL, don't say that too loud... for all we know George could fire 'em all and give Getsy, Kevin Warren's job - and give him "complete authority" to do what the family tells him to do. LOLOL.
I don't think you will get an argument from too many people on that. But I still think Flus stays. Which will make for another frustrating year, IMO
It will be a another frustrating year but more importantly we will have passed on the #1 pick and a golden opportunity to reset with a new QB and HC.
I am biased and admit that I've always liked getting Justin Fields as our QB so it colors my judgment on this considerably. I also admit I get pretty angry whenever I think about how the Bears failed to set him up for success here. But that ship has sailed and we can't undo what's happened to Fields here. So, looking forward it gets so complicated keeping him.
1. I'm wondering if Fields' original ceiling has been permanently lowered by these 3 years with the Nagy/Getsy thing? If so then maybe he will never be the guy we hoped he could be. I just don't know.
2. These gyrations to keep 'Flus, add new coordinators (O and D), keep Fields but install a new offense - after wasting Fields' rookie contract years... it just seems to be like the past failures of not starting clean top to bottom with the coaches and QB1 synced up from day-1. I know it "can" work... anything is possible. But is it best? I don't know.
3. Maybe it's best to just start over. That may even be better for Fields anyway. He may be able to go to a better franchise that isn't quite as dysfunctional as the Bears.
4. All that said, I'll bet you anything that the Bears cobble together some "misfit toys" thing that will just end up not working anyway. Eberflus will probably stay and we will get the new QB1 and new OC/offense, and next year Flus will be fired and George will make the new guy keep the existing QB1 drafted this year - and the dysfunction will continue for yet another cycle of fail. I do fear that this will be the case. LOL, no, I won't bail as a fan. I'll keep hoping some day in a land far, far away, the story here changes for the better. I'll keep cheering for the team. I'll keep posting here, hoping. A hope springs eternal kind of thing...

JABF, we can't know the unknowable (#1). Has his ceiling been lowered by Bears failure or was it always lower? Unknowable
Gonna take you back exactly 3 years ago. Remember the infamous "collaboration" presser with George & Teddy?
Remember me ranting at the moon when they kept Pace/Nagy "one more year"?
If you would like me to list in chronological order all the toxic screwups that flowed directly from that huge screwup, let me know. But that is the moment Justin Fields was "ruined". He wasn't even on the roster yet but he was doomed from that moment if you believe that otherwise he'd be a star QB right now.
That started the chain of events by mismatching a new QB to a lame duck failing HC they held onto one year too long. That delayed the teardown and rebuild by a year too. Thus, 2 years were wasted right off the top because they didn't align the timelines and infrastructure (coaches, GM, and QB all tied together).

We are about to make the same mistake again.
Funny you should mention it but I was thinking about how you called it correctly back then. Yeah, you're probably right again.

You can make a case for keeping Fields. I agree with that. Maybe Harbaugh could salvage him, I dunno.
I don't know what the case is for keeping Flus. He's Popular with the players, I guess. That's it. Don't tell me there aren't upgrades out there. Harbaugh and Vrable are both huge upgrades that could be signed tomorrow.
I am terrified they are gonna run it back with Flus & Fields (which will fail) and miss the chance to reset and align everything perfectly.
I am also terrified they're gonna keep Flus and draft a new QB (how does that pairing make any sense?) and then have to fire him a year later (which repeats what they did with Fields in 2020).
The one benefit I can think of from being a bad franchise for so long is that these guys have made every possible mistake before so you would think they would now have a blueprint for avoiding new ones.
My only hope is that Kevin Warren can restrain George and Teddy from their worst impulses. Otherwise, get ready for another wasted 3 years.

I believe I know the case for keeping Flus. He has really brought the locker room together. And he has done it during a difficult time. Through losses and personnel upheaval. He has made the D better and he has seemingly turned the team around. All of those are valid arguments, but IMO, not enough to keep him. The HR upheaval was caused by his people. The D did get better, but also Sweat came on board. And it was pathetic in the last game. The locker room, he really has done well on. Hats off to him. He deserves that credit. If they want to keep him, they have enough to make a case for him. Bottom line is they are going to do what they are going to do and they will justify it. And who knows. They may be right. Personally, I think keeping him is a mistake, but my feelings don't really matter
