But here's the thing, David, not even Warren has that authority now. We are being told that the Eberflus tenure decision will be made by the family - but Warren will have some "input" on that decision... Poles isn't even a byword in the decision.
The owner can always veto any decision. That’s true for any franchise. The question is how much will McCaskey defer to Warren. If he’s true to his own words, he will defer unless Warren wants something George thinks is absolutely outrageous. I don’t think that’s likely. It’s not difficult to make a case for either firing or keeping Eberflus. When Warren makes his speech supporting Flus this week, he will stress the importance of stability, continuity, blah, blah, blah. Warren himself will be influenced by Poles strong support for Flus. If Poles were to throw Flus under the bus in his conference with Warren, I think Flus would get fired. That’s why I hold Poles largely responsible for Flus.
It didn't sound like veto power. It sounded like the decision will be made by the family. With input from Warren. Anyway it will be interesting to watch what happens. I have the feeling George has decided to keep Eberflus. Poles will do as he's told and be thankful he still has a job I think.
Poles said himself that he fell in love with Eberflus at first sight. He accepted the job on the condition that he has final authority in the head coach decision. The committee gave him three recommendations. He chose Flus. End of story.
There have been multiple sources report otherwise. And even if you DO believe the "party line" on this, he still was not in on the interviews and forced to pick from 3 people that he had NOT picked. And you saw the people on that HC hiring committee right? Holy cow. The search team consisted of Ted Phillips, George McCaskey, Tanesha Wade (she is hired as a "diversity" person... not sure what that involves but it sure isn't football), Bill Polian and "Soup" Campbell an ex-cornerback for the Lions (back in the day). LOL. You can't make this stuff up it's so crazy. This "committee" handed Poles 3 folders and told him to pick one of there "guys" - and Poles picked Eberflus. The reports are that he was pressured into picking Flus due to the fact he was their golden boy from the interviews. Now, keep in mind Ryan Poles is a 36 year old who understand very very very few people EVER get to be 1 of these 32 general managers of a professional football franchise.
Do you think he was going to insist on picking someone else? LOL.
You make a good point, JABF.
We will never know the full truth but yeah I fully agree with you that most likely Poles was handed a couple names, probably with a "favorite" there, and told to pick what he wanted. And of course he went along to get the job.
It was a choice that wasn't really a choice.
And you could totally see how Flus would be the George/Teddy pick. He's a defensive coach, quiet, Mr. "nice guy", doesn't rock the boat, won't cause controversy, etc. They have always valued conformity over all else.

Yes, George will have to sign-off on this. But it’s like Biden signing a piece of legislation.
If Flus were getting fired, it would have been announced on Black Monday like the other 5 teams did. The speech from Warren this week will be a public relations exercise to explain why nothing has happened. At most, they will say Getsy is fired.

This is also what I see going down
Someone explain to me how there is "continuity" by keeping Flus and making Getsy the scapegoat. I'm still waiting for an answer on how this is gonna work.
Cuz if you're gonna stick with Flus/Fields for "continuity", you're also committing to Justin's 3rd OC in 4 years. And no one seems to be able to put any names to this mysterious magic-man new OC who's going to waft down from Heaven on a winged horse and magically transform Justin Fields into the kind of QB who can take teams on successive deep runs. And also no one has yet explained how little ole Flus is gonna identify and recruit this QB-guru guy to come work for him, knowing full well that Flus is going into year #3 and will almost certainly be fired if he doesn't reach the playoffs.

I'm dying to hear how this is gonna work!
That's easy. Keeping Flus is continuity. He stays as the HC another year. I know you know that. You are saying that getting rid of Getsky means that there is selective continuity. Yeah. They do what they want and then backfill the justification to fit. That's how it works. I'd like to see Flus and Getsy both gone and Fields here another year. But that's just me.

I would like to see Fields and Flus gone and Getsy here for another year. Just for shits n giggles

I agree. But they can aways spin the story 100 different ways. For example, they can just say Eberflus is the bedrock of stability and capable of steering the organization to keep making progress. 3 wins last year, 7 wins this year, playoffs next year. Hell, I could write the speech.

Not sure about the giggles, but would give lots of people the shits
