Stevenson is a starting CB. That is a critically important position if we are to be competitive in the division next year. He is performing below average, even among starting rookie CBs. Will he be good enough by next year? Maybe so. I will acknowledge that, and already have. That is not the difference between us. The difference between us is that I see him as a big gamble, if we don’t RECRUIT (via draft or FA) someone as insurance in the event that he doesn’t progress.
Butkus and I agree on Fields, but could be dead wrong.
You realize Stevenson is coming off his best game right?
He had a FF, and INT, and allowed zero receptions against one of the league's better pass offenses. Man, give the kid a chance! Anyone who didn't foresee TS getting nailed for PI a bunch as a rookie hasn't watched much NFL football. That he would have a rough start was about as easy to predict as the sun rising in the east.
Regardless, you don't give up on a promising, talented young player after 12 games. That's plain stupid. Jaylon Johnson is playing the best ball of his career right now (Cole Kmet too) and they're in year 4.
I am not “giving up” on him. This is about the third time I have said that. However, from what I have seen, I am not comfortable going into next season banking 100% on him at the other CB without a viable alternative. I do not feel this apprehensive about all the rookies or about JJ or Kmet in their rookie years. JJ was solid his rookie year and best CB on the team his second year.

BS
You repeatedly said he "needed to be replaced". That's synonymous.
As for backups, Bears have a solid group with Smith, Jones, and Blackwell. The weakest link in the secondary right now is probably Eddie Jackson. If anyone should be replaced, it is him. He's a poor tackler, looks past his prime, and is overpaid. He's gone this offseason. I'd wager a lot of money on that. Poles will "recruit" his replacement in a few months.

You can replace him without giving up on him. Every damn year there is a veteran quality CB available in free agency. I’d try to get one. Maybe Kendall Fuller. Give Stevenson more time to develop, but not at the expense of our W-L record in a year Bears are supposedly trying to win the division. Julius Brents was drafted in the second round just ahead of Stevenson, and is better than him. If we get a center in free agency or trade Fields for a second round pick, we could use that for center/CB. There are alternatives to doing nothing about this in the offseason.
Another possibility is that Terell Smith flat beats him out in training camp or early in regular season. I have always thought Smith is better than him.
Last I checked when you sack the QB you hit them...no?
Better check again. If he goes down, that’s a sack, not a hit. He can get hit without going down and throw a TD or run for first down on third down. Fields has done it many times. That’s one reason why a sack counts more than a hit, and why all 3 Jones (Brax, Dewand, Broderick) have higher PFF grades than Wright. Dewand is the best pass blocker of the whole group.

DUDE...Julius Brents hasn't played in a game since OCTOBER!!!!! How is he "better than Stevenson" when he isn't even on the field??!!!!! Stop looking at PFF scores.

DUDE….i watched him in college as well as a pro. He shut down Johnston head-to-head. I posted about that at the time. The reason the Colts drafted him ahead of Stevenson is that he’s better than Stevenson. I just checked his PFF grade, and it is good. Stevenson is about 20 points under him. He is tall, has good speed, and can switch seamlessly between press coverage and zone. Have you ever seen him play?
He was not a Poles recruit. He was a 2017, 6th round pick by the Saints. He was signed here as a FA in 2022. He played a season and was released by the Bears. He's with the Colts again now.
Exactly
He was a stopgap FA signing in a teardown season who was coming off his best football the year prior. He sucked here in 2022 and was released as he should have been.
Nothing else to see here. This kind of stuff with lottery ticket FAs happens on almost every team almost every year.
Seriously, David, please stop trolling. You know Muhammed was the minor-est of "misses" and every GM has those all the time.
None of that changes the fact that he was one of many absolute DOGS that Poles brought in 2022 and continues in 2023. He’s wasted millions on some of them like him, Leatherwood and Pringle that could have been used on free agents who can play. All GMs make mistakes — and some make more mistakes and bigger mistakes than others.

I know how football works...I played it.
Then you know the difference between a hit and a sack. Allowing sacks is much worse than hits.
