For me he would have to not just put up numbers and victories but I need to see him run through his progressions faster through a consistent 3-4 progression and even a few on the move.

I don't see this magically happening.
I think I'm just hoping he can look more comfortable, playing with confidence. We've seen glimpses of that in a few games since he's been here. He seemed more settled in the Washington and Denver games. But in the Vikes game he looked uptight again... he looks like he's over-thinking it all in those kind of games and that's where he looks worse as a QB. A good QB has to be comfortable and confident - otherwise he is just not going to play well.
I would like to see him getting the ball to guys downfield more often. The OL is doing a better (not great but better) job of holding up for some of these passes now. But the WRs have to do their part in this. If they don't then these attempts will just be ints. We really need Mooney to step up now so we have something other than just D.J. Moore. Hope we don't see Velus anymore. I don't think St. Brown is very good either. I notice that Tyler Scott is not listed on the official Bears depth chart right now... what's that about?
Anyway, getting back to Fields, I can't quantify what I'm wanting to see in these games but for me it will be more of a "know it when I see it" kind of thing. I think we all will know when we see it. But we do need to see the sustained improvement.
So this is a good example of what I'm talking about. The point isn't Bagent is the "better" QB, it's that Fields isn't performing significantly better than a rookie Div 2 QB. Fields should be a lot better than this in his 3rd year. Why is Bagent even in this conversation given he has half of Fields' natural ability? They have the same personnel around them. This why I have little faith Fields' is ever going to figure it out.
As you point out. Fields does have more natural ability than Bagent. But it sure looks to me like the primary factor holding him back (in games like against the Vikings) is that he seems to not play relaxed and confident. He seems to over-think (holding onto the ball rather than firing it out to receivers who ARE as they say "NFL open" and that's the problem I see. In these next 7 games I'm hoping to see him play more like he did against Wash. & Denver... just relax and play looser. Not so uptight. I wonder if he just puts too much pressure on himself, trying too hard to not make mistakes? IDK, I'm just spit-balling... don't claim to know.

You know what else is really frustrating?
Seeing another young OSU QB (Stroud) lighting it up with virtually no talent around him. Is it the coaching/scheme or is it Fields? I think we are about to find out here soon. Cuz if JF isn't significantly outperforming Bagent over the next 7 games, he really doesn't have any more excuses.
And one more thing: If the Bears go in a different direction at QB next April, I'm leaning heavily towards Maye >> Williams. I reserve the right to change my mind as more info comes to light between now and then but right now I'm not excited about Caleb at all. From what I have read he sounds like Fields with less running ability (holds ball too long, not great at throwing with anticipation, too many fumbles, etc.)
My hope is Fields continue to play the way he was before he got hurt. It seems people forget his past two performances before he got hurt, and it seems they forget he led that group of crap last year for an 8 week stretch of being one of the top scoring units in the NFL. HE CAN DO IT, and I'm confident if he doesn't do it here, he'll do it somewhere else.
If Fields plays well they should pick up his 5th year option, draft MHJ, and either draft the best LT available, trade down and draft Brock Bowers or the 3 tech from Illinois. That would be the best scenario for the Bears cause it would greatly improve the team overall. This is what Bears fans should be rooting for.
I certainly haven't forgotten. But it was two performances. Against two terrible defenses. One of them almost entirely a DJ Moore show. Plenty of QBs can play a great game or two. I want to see consistency. Which he's never really shown over three years. I'd love to see him do it, but I'm not holding my breath.
He can't control who's on the schedule. He had a 5 week stretch last season where he had the Bears offense performing among the best in the league. So I think you have forgotten a little bit.
This is a mix of NextGen Stats, ESPN, PFR Advanced Stats, and PFF Grades.

Except they really didn't. Bagent had the benefit of most of the offensive line being healthy for him. Fields still hasn't played in a game with Braxton at left tackle and Jenkins at left guard and Davis at right guard like its supposed to be. Bagent also got to play two of the worst teams in the league. Fields mops the floor with the Raiders and Panthers...thats not even a question.

Not to mention the defensive secondary has been coming together and getting healthy in recent weeks — I say this concerning wins/loses as well as field position battle.

Why must the stars have to be perfectly aligned to judge Fields' performance? This is almost never going to happen. Certainly not on a consistent basis. All QBs have to deal with these issues. The good ones overcome them and shine regardless. Why can't Fields? Why would we want a QB who can only perform when everyone around him is perfectly healthy and playing well? How often is that going to even happen during a season?

It’s not. So it comes down to Fields or coaching. We’ll know a lot more after this Sunday which it is.

It definitely matters. All the talk about "complementary football" isn't just a buzz word being thrown around. It matters to the teams success. Offense can't put the defense in bad situations and the defense can't put the offense in bad situations.
