LOL, I have to ask because I'm wondering about it myself. Yes, it's a long-shot but possible. If Fields comes back and builds on those two solid games he had before getting hurt, in the Broncos and Commanders games - where the Bears scored 68 points (before the Vikes win where he got hurt and the Bears lost 19-13) - well, how does this play out at the end of the season with Poles/Eberflus/Getsy/Fields? How SHOULD it play out? I'm talking about a CLEAR solid QB1 performance that shows that those two games were not an aberration, and we see some stacked wins.

...Pick up Fields 5th yr option happily

...Trade down to #3 if possible. We almost certainly are going to have the #1 or #2 pick, probably #1, after watching Carolina play. That team isn't winning more than 3 games this year.

...Drafting MHJ at #3. Nothing to think about at all here. He's easily the best non-QB player in this draft and its a high impact position of need. COMPLETE NO BRAINER

...With the second pick of the round, I'm drafting BPA at OT, DE, or DE.

...oh yeah, I'm still firing and replacing Flutsy.

I think it is a long shot that we see this best case scenario happen. But it's still a possibility. If there's one thing I've learned watching football (at any level), it's that anything CAN happen. It may not be probable. But the possibility is there. Thanks for your input because this has been bugging me for awhile now, as far as what should happen if the team does significantly improve once Fields is back - with solid QB play from Fields, building on those two solid games we saw him play against the Broncos and Commanders.

What that will mean to me is that the team started out the season as most of us predicted - in fact rougher than I thought would happen. But it would mean the team improved as we had hoped. That truly WOULD be best case scenario. I don't know if it is going to happen but it could happen yet this season.

I wonder who gets fired if the team is playing at that level? If the team is playing good ball, with an improved defense and improved offense - especially an improved Justin Fields - I would think that would indicate the coaching has improved too.

butkus3595 what do you think? I'm curious.

I will say it again. Not all games are created equal. I am basing my vote on the two LIONS games. Beating other teams is nice, but I need to know that he’s good enough against the LIONS that with addition of Harrison and a good center, he can beat their defense in 2024. In that case, neither I nor the Bears would draft a QB.

If he plays the same way he’s played for the last two years or worse, I am drafting a QB. In that case, it’s anybody’s guess what Poles will do.

Fields needs to play well against the Lions, Vikings, and Browns. If he can't do that the Bears need to move on. I don't care about his performance against the other teams.

If Myles Garrett &Co. cream Field’s ass again, I’m not going to worry much about that. That’s on the OL, not Fields. But I agree that, if plays well under pressure against Browns, that counts for something but not as much as LIONS. They are arch-enemy. Browns aren’t even in conference.

Vikings? Maybe. But LIONS have tougher defense, DVOA notwithstanding.

I think it is a long shot that we see this best case scenario happen. But it's still a possibility. If there's one thing I've learned watching football (at any level), it's that anything CAN happen. It may not be probable. But the possibility is there. My hope is Fields continue to play the way he was before he got hurt. It seems people forget his past two performances before he got hurt, and it seems they forget he led that group of crap last year for an 8 week stretch of being one of the top scoring units in the NFL. HE CAN DO IT, and I'm confident if he doesn't do it here, he'll do it somewhere else.

If Fields plays well they should pick up his 5th year option, draft MHJ, and either draft the best LT available, trade down and draft Brock Bowers or the 3 tech from Illinois. That would be the best scenario for the Bears cause it would greatly improve the team overall. This is what Bears fans should be rooting for.

I certainly haven't forgotten. But it was two performances. Against two terrible defenses. One of them almost entirely a DJ Moore show. Plenty of QBs can play a great game or two. I want to see consistency. Which he's never really shown over three years. I'd love to see him do it, but I'm not holding my breath.

First thought reading through some of the comments, I don't think it's fair to dismiss the Fields performances over the Broncos and Commanders.

My argument, the offensive line was in such flux those first 5 weeks.

4 OL combinations in 5 weeks — plus week 6 had a 5th new combination. Not just that, but look at the players who were next man up. Borom has played poorly at LT. Patrick and Whitehair have constantly been our worst performing pieces yet are our most reliable/available interior OL players. Even week 5, the staff was playing musical chairs with our best offensive lineman - rotating Teven into the lineup.

Sure, the Broncos and Commanders aren't the best defenses, but clearly the Bears aren't the best offense in the league either. Bagent playing the (still McDaniels lead) Raiders and (worst team in the league) Panthers, the offense could only muster 324 passing yards and a single passing TD between the two games. Clearly, right now, Bagent is a backup QB at best, but Fields can still do special things.

More to the topic now

Flash plays have never been an issue for Justin. What we need to see from him is consistency. This crunch time in his career is coming at the worst time for him with his thumb issue. Even if he's "100%" he's likely going to face pain and issues throwing the ball throughout the remaining games — affect the consistency we will want to see.

What I want to see is a QB who doesn't leave the ball in harms way when he scrambles. Takes chances down the field while moving the chains with his arm & legs. I don't care about passing numbers per se, I just don't want to see double digit passing yardage or multiple interception games. Score points, move the ball, and don't turn the ball over. That will give Poles plenty to think on.

If he can do that the remaining games, I seriously think about keeping Fields. The best option for the team is Fields to be successful. Personally, I want Marvin Harrison Jr more than any player in the draft, I've mentally done gymnastics to reason why MHj should go first overall.

What Poles / the GM will do? My guess, they will look to get the best value in a trade and take a QB №1.
