It is looking like there are QB prospects in this draft class who could be solid at the NFL level, but also may require some development time. If we do draft one of these guys, would it make sense to just keep Jay for 2017?

I think I'm one of the few Bear's fans that it just fine with keeping him. If another team wants to offer a draft pick for him then I take that trade for sure. Just releasing him doesn't seem like the best idea but it's certainly not the worst either because of the savings. I guess I'm indifferent to what happens and have excepted that the QB position next year will be a mess just like it was this year.

No, I'm with you. I dooonnnnttt caaaaarrrreeee one way or the other about Cutler staying or leaving.
Getting rid of him is okay AS LONG AS we replace him with somebody better and get good value for him.
Keeping him one more year is okay as long as we get his replacement on board NOW.
That said, to answer JABF's question, yes it makes sense to keep Jay for a year if we draft a kid that needs developmental work. He's already on the roster and will be less expensive than other FA QBs on the market, and likely a better QB than those on the FA list.
for entertainment value, my first thought when I read the thread title was... it would be a mental case.

I was thinking about it this morning. Will the Bears (and fans) have the patience to see a draftee developed and not starting the first year? I thought of Green Bay letting Aaron Rodgers sit at first. Granted Cutler isn't Favre. And I thought about the Patriots will probably not start a rookie when Tom Brady retires. They will probably have a young guy developed and ready to go when that day comes. Green Bay didn't need a top-3 pick to land Aaron Rodgers. I'll bet the Patriots won't need a top-3 pick to get their Brady replacement either.
There are a lot of ways this could play out with the Bears and their QB quest. But one scenario could be to keep Cutler around one more season.
I care, if this team is content w/another .500 or worse season, which is just about all they've ever gotten out of his play, then Im not okay with that. He's not a good qb, he's at times an, at best, above average qb, and more often then not a below average qb. If this team cannot find better then him, then they need new people that can.
Guy has had 9 years to help get this team better and the Bears have 1 playoff appearance to show for it. Is that all on him; no, but enough of it is to say it's time to move on. If you were getting rid of guys like Marshal, Bennett, Forte, Slaussen b/c they were part of a losing culture, then wtsf is Cutler still doing on this team when the contract finally allows you to move on?

The QB to get the Bears above .500 is not on the roster yet and most likely will not be found before the season starts. A rookie is not going to get the Bears above .500. The only way any QB they have now or draft will get them above .500 is if the rest of the team is just that good, like the Cowboys.
Okay, lets assume you are correct and there is no qb that can get the bears over .500, how does that mean you keep one that won't get you over .500.
Why not get the next guy in game experience and start the process now? Why keep the same shit you've had just b/c the next guy might not be better; but really cannot be worse(as proven by his now 3 or 4 backups that have negated the team losing him).
Do you guys really want Cutler here? I know most might be scared to try and find our next QB but Cutler isn't something special. He's a .500 QB a best
I'm all ready to move on
Why would I be upset if he's still here? I never hated him like some. I know he's good enough to win games. I also know he's not good enough to get us deep into the playoffs but no QB on the team is. The QB position is not like any other position on the team where you can just throw a guy in there and get by for a couple of games.
Like I said before, I don't care it they get rid of Cutler but I don't see why anyone would be that upset if he were still on the team.

How much would we have to spend to keep Hoyer? If he enters as the primary starter to start the season (maybe the whole season) before starting our 1st/2nd round QB, that'd be okay in my book. I have faith in Hoyer to guide this team to something close to .500, similar to what Cutler would do, but at a cheaper rate. I mean, do we not expect a QB within our first two picks? Obviously if we trade for a QB, Cutler is gone anyways.
