If the Bears have to go QB in the first or second round, wouldn't it make more sense to trade down or trade for an extra pick in the first round.
Depending who's there when we pick, I'm with you. If we lose out on the top tier players (Allen and Garrett) I think our best bet would be to trade down and grab an extra 2nd or pick. Lots will change between now and the draft though. Revelations about domestic abuse Drug Issues Character Problems Hyper Combine scores Crappy Bowl Performances Injuries etc.
I just finished watching Dak Prescott on MNF tonight. I was curious how the guy fell so far in the draft. Here's some of the stuff said about him by the "experts" prior to the draft.
This is why I take it with a grain of salt when the "experts" whine each year about how bad the draft is for QBs. There HAVE been good QB's in recent drafts. The big challenge is to evaluate players well and FIND them. Granted it's not a science. But I'm getting tired of hearing every year the whiners saying "it's a bad year for quarterbacks" when in fact, most of those years produce a few solid guys.
Here's the Dak negatives: "Increase in short pass attempts from 86 to 208 this year reason for higher completion numbers. Accuracy on intermediate and deep throws dropped sharply. Pocket poise has been compromised. Hyper aware of pressure around him and lacks awareness to slide and find temporary shelter to make throw. Concern over pressure too often trumps ability to get through progressions. Must speed up the pace of his reads. Footwork is a mess. Slight stride onto stiff upper leg with little weight shift. Restricted follow through and too often tries to muscle throws with upper body. Throws to target rather than leading or throwing them open on short/intermediate throws. Too respectful of underneath coverage and must be more willing to challenge the defense. Needs to improve anticipation.
the tape shows a player who must improve his mechanics, poise and quickness through his progressions if he is to become a full-time starter in the NFL. There are absolutely draftable traits and upside, but he will need extended work to smooth out his flaws."
"His footwork is inconsistent and he loses accuracy when his feet are not set.
Tends to predetermine some throws and relies on a lot of back shoulder patterns, something that got him in trouble against Auburn and Alabama. Has not shown the consistency to lead his team through the air in tough road environments when the ground game is shut down.
COMPARES TO: Tim Tebow, ex-Broncos, Jets, Patriots - It is the natural comparison, beyond just the connection to Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen, who was Florida's offensive coordinator when Tebow was in Gainesville."
I see some mocks with Allen going first and Garrett going second, so even with a third, we may miss out on them. Barnett is also a good player so that would leave him (and of course others) as well as whatever QB we would want.
Damn, I keep whining about that second pick. No way to get it now. Even if the 9ers win again, their SOS would still get them the #3. For them a win does not hurt their draft status.

BIH, let's hope the bonehead FO's of either the Browns or 49's get desperate and grab both Garrett and Trubisky in order or vice versa. I am now on the bandwagon of: Round 1 - Allen, Round 2 - Best QB available, Round 3 - Best CB available.

A LOT was made about his work in the offseason to prepare himself for the pro's. So all of that MIGHT have been true, or maybe it was overblown. But that's what you cannot put into these profiles, willingness to improve and work ethic. Dak had those 2 in spades, as well as nfl qb traits.

After you see the required physical ability to play in the NFL game, the most important attributes for a QB are intelligence, character, work ethic and the willingness to learn (or you could say the willingness to accept coaching). Very few if any prospects enter the league completely ready for the NFL. Obviously Prescott as all of the above in abundance.
Actually you could use those requirements for virtually any position.

What I see happening during many draft years is that the so-called "experts" don't know their ass from a hole in the ground. They get it wrong. Especially with quarterbacks. I understand why. It is very difficult to project how a college QB from a college spread offense is going to perform in the NFL. It is a different world for QB's at the NFL level. I get that. But I no longer buy into the crap about "oh, it's a bad year for QB's" that we hear every year now. Same old crap we hear, yet SOME teams are getting really good QB's.
I have loved watching the youngsters perform this year. I've liked it a lot. We are watching the first steps of players who will ultimately be the future Tom Brady's and Aaron Rodgers. Even though they struggle some in their first seasons, they still put on a show. I loved watching Dak perform last night. People can write it off that he's on a good team with a good OL and has a great RB. But that kid has talent in his own right. Heck, we have enough OL right now to support a decent QB. If the QB doesn't hold the ball for an eternity. And we don't have an EE like Dallas, but Jordan Howard is certainly decent. Decent enough.
Anyway, I'm rambling. My point is that there will be a few decent QBs drafted in this draft. I don't know who they are, but they will be there. We just need for the scouting department and Ryan Pace to ID the guy we need and get it right this time. I know that's asking a lot, but that's what those guys get paid for - to bring in player talent.

It's for all positions, mostly QB though. Athleticism in most positions will get you far in the NFL, but you still need to be willing to work on your game, but the QB position work is the MOST important part of it.

Scouts are going to get it wrong, nobody is perfect, but it's impossible to know how much these kids want it. They all want the money that comes w/it, but do they WANT to play in the NFL, to put the time in to be the best, to study, to work, to improve. When your broke it's easy to be willing to do all that, when you have more money then you've ever known, that your family has ever known, that makes it far more difficult.
Worse yet, the college game is no longer trying to emulate pro football, mainly b/c there are to many college programs and to few talented football players.

+1 My main point is that I don't buy into the whining each and every year about how it's a poor draft for QBs. The last 10 drafts there have been some very decent QB's drafted. I suspect that trend will continue this upcoming draft. This season I have really enjoyed watching some of the better young QB's play. They have struggled at times, and even had bad games. But you can clearly see the talent there and they are going to be solid NFL quarterbacks. I just want Pace to get ours drafted. Yes, it's a hard task. But that is his job. LOL, my job is hard too. I perform or I will lose my job. I suspect most of us here are like that. Pace's job is to bring in solid player talent - and that includes the QB position. I like that old Belichick saying, "Just do your job" :-)
