I don't follow ND that closely. I really don't follow any college team closely. My dad was a die-hard ND fan though, and I did follow the team when I was young, but that was a long time ago. But if this guy has the talent then I really don't care what team he has played for.
Right now he's the only QB w/a strong 1st round grade also. Is he complete ready to start day 1, might not be, but he's the closest and has the most to work with.
He had a bad year this year no doubt, but again there is a mess in ND, but that's b/c of Kelly, not Kizer.

Point taken.. Still I do want to see some competition in the TC for the starting QB position regardless who the Bears draft and in which round.
Comparing Kelly to Manziel is just ignorant. Look at The "incidents" of Kelly, they all were over 2 years ago except for the one where his brother was pretty much being lynched on the sidelines and he came to his defense. Watch the tape. Watch the Alabama game in where he picked that top ranked D apart. I'd take him as the guy to build around over any other QB in this draft - why - because IMO he's the best college QB I've seen this year (I will note that there are a few guys, like Trubisky, that I've never seen play other than highlight film and I don't count that because you could make a highlight film of ANY QB and make them look great - truth is it's a far cry from the real story).
The more I look at Kelly, the more I might want to take a chance on him. I'd be good with Allen in the first (assuming we still draft at #3 and he is there) and Kelly in the second. We need other players such as secondary really bad, but we have to also continue to plug holes. Pace does well in FA also, so hopefully we can continue to get better. Change out what we are doing in our training dept and take a serious look at whether or not we want to keep Fox and let's get this done with no more looking at high draft picks next year. It is time all Bears fans look forward to winning as many games as we can and getting into the post season. That's what real teams do and we need to be there.
I agree that we could take a chance on him. But there would have to be a ton of research done on this kid. And IMO he is not worth anything higher than a 4th round pick due to his baggage.
He could be another Kyle Long, a kid who had a lot of drink, drug, party issues in college but who woke up and got his head straight. But he also could be another Kyle Lyerla. Remember him, the super potential TE from Oregon that a whole lot of us on the old board wanted? He is now an arena league washout who just got busted for a drug offense, for the nth time.
I agree that Kelly has tons of potential. I have watched him play and he really flashes NFL skills. But whoever takes this kid need to really do their homework on him.

OH man I was just thinking about that Lyerla debate the other night, couldn't remember his name. Didn't GB take a shot on him? That's the problem w/addicts(if Kelly is one) you have no idea what they are going to do. Especially w/the wealth that comes from the NFL. Add in the wealth from a weathly father and its even more unpredictable.

There are a lot of parallels with Kelly and Johnny football, but there are also some significant differences.
One big thing for me is that Kelly has pedigree. Sometimes that means a lot and sometimes that means nothing. But he does have people around him that can help him and have helped him. All Johnny Football had was a priveledged rich lifestyle.
I actually would want Kelly with a third, but he may not last in a QB starved league. People like Belichick and Jerrah will always take talent even with issues because they are willing to control the kids. Righ now Jerrah looks like he is set at QB, and he was my biggest worry at taking him kind of early because of his potential. Belichick will take him but only when he is a steal.
He may make it to 3 (hopefully even 4) but I'd take him at 3 just to get him. Problem is Fox is not big on working with potential if they have issues. And there are some of those kids that really DO respond in the right environment. You just need the right coaches and family around him.

BIH, I like your points along with what JABF and others have written. Pace has done well in FA and in the secondary thread I pose the exact scenario you have here about getting an impact DB. Here is one write up done recently on Falk who is similar as a system QB like Goff and what JABF described:
At 6-4, 216 pounds, he has the prototypical frame of an pro quarterback (though he could use a few pounds of extra bulk), and his arm talent in NFL caliber. His touch is arguably the best of any quarterback in the nation, and he’s got a fantastic balance of being willing to challenge opposing defenses down the field, but also taking when he’s given in the right situations.
Falk’s detractors will point to the “system quarterback” label, but after seeing 2016 No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff come from a similar offense, it’s clear the NFL isn’t as concerned about that having a negative impact on a passer’s evaluation. Identifying vital traits is more important to pro scouts, and Falk should check those boxes, regardless of his offensive system.
In this year’s Apple Cup, Falk struggled against a Washington defense that is among the most dominant in the nation. He also completed less than half of his passes the week before in a loss to Colorado. That won’t look great to NFL scouts, but it shouldn’t overshadow his entire body of work, nor his overall projections as a prospect.

I agree completely. Every college kid is unique. I think one trait that separates the Belichicks from the wannabee coaches is being a fairly decent judge of people. Belichick doesn't always get it right either, but he seems to get talent on the cheap. If you get a guy at a high value like that, it's okay if you whiff from time to time. It's low risk, high reward. And in addition to that, Belichick often sells these guys to other teams at an over-inflated price and teams overpay for a guy who isn't that good once he's no longer on the Patriots. The guy is the master at judging talent though.
Pace & Fox?
After the Ray McDonald thing, they only want choirboys now. That's a shame. To compete in the NFL you have to be able to work with at least a few challenging players. It just comes with the coaching gig.

I think we need to see if Kelly follows the Kyle Long path. I can see a lot of similarities between the two (NFL lineage, rich and privileged childhood, etc). Also there is some stuff in the press that his current coach seems to have reached the kid.
Personally, I am really suspicious of unnamed sources posting images on the internet. Not saying anything about whether or not Kelly is in that photo or if he was smoking dope or not. Just that we need to be really careful with this kind of stuff (like all the baggage surrounding the release of that photo of Tunsil).
But again teams really need to do their research on Kelly. He could be a real steal if he lasts well into day 2. And he could be a total waste of a draft choice, regardless of the round.
