The good is the defensive secondary and the DL with addition of Murphy. If they can (finally!) stop the run, the defense could be pretty good.
The issue on offense is the offensive line. Lucas is still on PUP list and his career may be done. We have to see how Olu can do at center, and guards are not much more than average. But, like the Bears, they are loaded at the offensive skilled positions.
Overall, I think Bears have better chance of going over on 8.5 wins.
I think the changing of the guard with Pete Carrol gone and 1st year Head Coach makes this season a bit more unpredictable as well. Everyone wants to be super optimistic that year 1 will be a welcome change but Carrol was a heck of a HC.
I agree. However, I can say that Pete was not appreciated by a lot of what JABF calls “meatball” Seahawks fans.
I just looked at the official depth chart heading into first game. Training camp is over. Preseason is over. Walker is still ahead of Booker. WTF? Anybody who’s been paying attention can see that Booker is better than Walker. It’s not even very close IMO.
I'm fine starting Booker and getting him as many reps with the 1s as we can.
Let's be measured here though. Booker pounded the Walmart Greeters on the other team, but then again he did pound them. He did what a talented player is supposed to do.
That second pass rusher emerging is the most important thing that can happen this season. It changes the entire defense.
Sweat is going to draw double teams. But now what does the opposing OL do if Booker or Dexter become a threat? Then if Booker or Dexter emerge, now it's that much easier for the third guy to emerge because the other two players are drawing the attention.
While I was hoping for a more impactful trade (for somebody that we can have longer term not a 1 year rental), Booker took care of business in the preseason.
What's the point of drafting players if you aren't going to play the ones that perform? So, yeah, I say start the guy.
For now I'm just trusting the coaches to be making the best decisions regarding the depth chart. They are with these players and we are not. The coaches want to win because their jobs depend on winning... so they are invested far more than us fans. It doesn't mean they are right. But they do have more information and experience than us. Hopefully they get it right.
I know. I’m Just Another Bears Fan who goes by what I’ve seen on the field. That’s all we’ve got. And what I’ve seen is that Booker is better than Walker and has more potential. Walker has 7 years of mediocrity under his belt. They plan to start Walker and rotate him with Taylor. Obviously, Taylor has more NFL experience than Booker and has good pass rushing skills, which we need. But that’s going to greatly limit Booker’s chances to get on the field. Maybe butkus is right that I have him overrated, but that’s how I see it.
This.
We know what Walker is. He'll never be anything special. Walker is good against the run, but this is a passing league.
Booker has displayed the capability, yes against Walmart Greeters so far, to have a much higher ceiling. Let's see what we have. It's not Booker's fault he pounded the Walmart Greeters. That's who Eberflus put him up against.
Worst case scenario, Booker goes out there for let's say three games and doesn't produce. OK fine, Walker wouldn't do much either.
But what if Booker tees off? Can you imagine what this defense, and team, would be like if Booker was a 10 sack guy opposite Sweat?

Booker can still do that. I don't understand why people think he's not going to play now. He is...a lot. And he'll do it in situations that will highlight what he's good at right now. You sprinkle him in to other situations to see how he does and keep him confident. Lineups aren't set in stone and unable to be changed either. If Booker proves through the first few games that he can play the run, then he'll earn more playing time in run situations. Its really not a big deal.
Its like we don't remember the Alex Brown -- Mark Anderson debate from the SB years. Brown started all season but Anderson came in on passing downs and finished with 12.5 sacks--coming in off the bench.
Next season Lovie decides to start Anderson, get him on the field more and teams ate him up in the running game. It was sooooooo bad, Brown went back to being the starter and Anderson came in off the bench. I understand the move and why Lovie did it.
Stop the run on early downs, get the down and distance to where Booker can pin his ears back and go get the QB. Its going to be match-up based as well. When the Titans run out there with 3 WR and and 2 TE Booker subs in--even on first down. Booker is going to get plenty of work. And some passing downs will involve run plays. He'll see his snaps increase if he can show he can hold against the run.

+1 And a good "reality check" for us fans is that hey, we ARE fans and not professional career coaches who are with these guys full-time. We put our TV remote control down after watching a preseason game and "crown" the new kid as being "The Guy" who should start. It's pure "Meatball island" stuff from us fans. Hey, I'm guilty of it too. But from time to time we probably should do a reality check on these things. JMO.

I was just getting ready to bring up Mark Anderson. Not only did he get eaten up in the run game his second year but his sacks dropped off to 5. He was a role player and that may be all Booker is. We don't know yet, but might as well trust the coaches at this point and see what he can do off the bench.

I've always heard there was a meatball island located somewhere in the northwest. Apparently there was a migration from Chicago to the northwest many years ago and they landed there. I've read that there are actually ancient cave etchings of this. Notice the bear in this one:
The little dude with the spear must be a fan from an opposing team. And (below) is an ancient pic on the island of Bears offensive linemen... you can tell they're Bears OL due to the fact they have 15 players trying to max-protect the QB back then (like today, 5 Bears OL can't get it done). But what the heck is that object on the one OL guys head?

oh.... that particular lineman just has a chip on his shoulder

but it's not on his shoulder. I believe it's a dunce cap. Any lineman who gets more than two false start penalties in a half has to wear it until the next lineman screws up. It's a training tool that weighs the guy down to make him think about timing. It also works to strengthen the player's muscles so he can hopefully start slowing down the rushers just a teeny little bit. The coaches are trying to get away from the snowmen in a blizzard method of blocking snowflakes blowing past them.
