"Edit: The proverbial cat is out of the bag. The Bears have already decided they are going "with Murphy at #9. Adam Schefler nailed it."
"It was more than a hint. Eberflus sold him on Murphy, and now Poles is preparing us for it, even if Odunze is on the board. On Brugler’s rankings, Odunze is #6 and Murphy #16. If possible, I’d rather trade down for Newton plus 2nd round pick than take Murphy at #9."
Don't you love it when people just KNOW what is going to happen before it does? Yet none of them have won any lotteries. Go figure.
Its pretty clear now that Poles was using Schefter to blow some smoke. I thought that might have been the case two days ago but I also admit I was kinda nervous it might be accurate. It can be really tough to tell what is bonafide leaked info and what is intentional disinfo.
Hoge was also high on Murphy while also worried me cuz he's a pretty straight shooter.
I'm glad it was just smoke cuz Murphy is undersized and I wasn't interested in him at all unless we traded way back.
Interesting to watch Falcons QB development over the next 2-3 years. They are following the GB-model as may posters/writers/fans believe it to be: draft a rookie and sit him behind a vet for 2-3 seasons and voila--it all works out. Personally I don't believe it, but I thought the Bears were SB bound when they traded for Cutler so what do I know.
(EDIT: before I get yelled at I'm not claiming that Penix got drafted at the right time or that I consider him having the ability and/or makeup to turn into a real NFL QB. What I am saying is that those who champion the "GB-way" for the most part don't consider the QB drafted, just that you take one early and let him sit.)
Minny---really what else were they going to do. They needed a QB unless we think Darnold is going to start more than 12 games this season. They have the WR, TE and RB. OL is not terrible. DEF is average to above average. Now I have doubts about JJMcCarthy but they were going to draft a QB. I thought they'd package the 2 first rounders and move up but...everyone stayed put.
Is the league recognizing that OFF>DEF or just a one year blip? I'm thinking blip.
Curious to see what QBs get drafted now.....who is still out there?
It was just a weird draft. Weird in that it was pretty darn predictable. There was a few wrinkles (Atlanta and Denver particularly), but otherwise fell pretty much like the mock said it would. That's unusual. Usually the mocks are accurate for only a few picks and then go to complete shit.
Was also a weird draft in that it is very thin and very O-talent-heavy. The D talent in this draft just isn't that great so everyone was loading up on QBs, WRs, and OTs.
I think an Olineman may be worth giving up a 2nd next year to get into thisnyears 2nd, but a Dlineman can fall to 3rd round
I love defense and think we still desperately need to add depth to the DL. Newton or some edge help would be grand.. however I would be ecstatic to trade back into the second and solidify the interior of our OL. If we grabbed our top rated center and we're sitting with Williams/Rome/Top C... Wow man that would be a wild top three picks.

I wonder if there might be some decent 2nd tier D talent depth though. Guys who are projects but could have a decent ceiling in the NFL. I don't claim to know because I have no clue. Just curious.

I'm sure there is, JABF. There will be guys taken Day 3 this draft who go on to have good careers.
Just saying there wasn't very good D-talent as far as "day 1 starters" go.

I totally agree. I was just curious what is left. I'll bet the Bears have a short list of guys whom they believe could be solid. I'm thinking this #75 pick tonight could give us a VERY decent interior OL guy. And it sure seems like a draft with 3 or 4 very special OL centers. Guys who could be an upgrade over anyone we now have at center. But hey, I admit I don't know how good the two veterans the Bears recently brought in at C are capable of being. Maybe one of those two could be really good for us. I'd take "really good" in 2024 and be happy with that.

I would expect Poles is drafting OL and DL with his two remaining picks. In whatever order.
Just BPA in the trenches is what I want him to do. Even if he whiffs completely on those two, we still had a great draft.

We just don't have capital to trade up with.
If the grades on the player are high enough I'd dip into next year to get back into the action. I trust the process and just these two is great but if there's a center who you think can be a real dude at the next level then keep building that offense and helping Caleb out even if you dip into the future assets.
