I saw that. They are talking about getting a C in FA. But it looks pretty thin to me in FA this year. According to Spotrac (LINK), they have Kelce as the #1 FA, but no way the Bears are going to get him. I'd love it if they could. The other top-5 include Whitehair & Lucas Patrick. There is Connor Williams, but he had a late in the season ACL and won't be much help this season. Maybe late in the season, like December-ish he'll be mostly back to form. So he is no help for most of the year. Andre James will be re-signed by LV, and he was an undrafted guy. The only other guy in the top-6 is undrafted OL center Aaron Brewer who ranks lower than Whitehair and just one spot ahead of Lucas Patrick.
I think the Bears would make a serious mistake not taking one of the top-3 or 4 centers in this draft.
But if they draft Williams and Nabers/Odunze are still there at #9, he’ll have to go that route, and maybe a center in second round from Fields trade.
I don't see how the Bears could possibly miss on getting one of the top 3 or 4 centers in this draft (I don't believe Powers-Johnson is the best of the 4 anyway). The high quality centers go that deep this year. They can go WR at 9 and still get a top-tier C in this draft. Certainly if the Bears can get a 2nd round pick in this draft they'll nail one. And I could see that 3rd round (75th overall pick in this draft) as getting us one of those top guys. And the way Poles likes to move around in the draft I'm pretty confident he will move up to get one of those top-tier C's. Not a 1st round guy but in the 2nd. And there are multiple ways to do this, in this particular draft. If they trade Fields, then that's our 2nd round pick for a C right there. If the Bears do a tiny trade down and take MHJ, Nabers or Odunze, with our top pick, then there should be an additional pick harvested in that trade down, resulting in us getting one of the top guys at C too. I don't see how the Bears could possibly "not" get one of the best in this draft. I just don't.
The elephant in the room is the failure of the Bears to anchor the offensive line with a quality center. It results in not having a pocket for the QB to step up into... you can't have a pocket passing QB until you provide a pocket, right? Kevin Warren & Poles & Cunningham understand this. They will get it done this year with the OL.
