For me, an "above average passing metric", while still a major improvement from here, is NOT enough. I want a legit top-7 QB. I don't want to dick around for the next 8 years like we did with Cutler trying to "fix" the QB. You have the #1 pick and once-a-decade QB prospect is sitting there for the taking.
Might be a different story is we were picking at #20. We aren't.
I maintain Fields ceiling is a mid-tier passer. I have seen nothing that shows me he will be good enough to justify passing on the #1 pick again this draft.
You cant have no.1s two years in a row and trade down both years!
Especially if you have a QB like Fields with so many unanswered questions.
Gave him a chance last year, now time to act. Unfortunately.
I get the feeling that Poles is always in Madden mode. I would not be surprised if he traded down

When u need a QB, you draft him at 1. Dont get smart, best odds right there.
You are confusing doing what makes sense with what they will actually do. And when haven't we had a bunch of guys that didn't think they were the smartest in the room. That has been part of the problem

I know. I also have PTSD of Bears franchise, top to bottom, so I dont think they can do any good with Fields nor a draftee. I hope. But, I really dont think they will, or can.
Played 12 games this year, 13 last year guess Fields got him hurt last year to? What will be the excuse next year when he plays around 12 again? Not even 150 carries(both years) and injuries pop up 600 yards and 2 td's. That is not starting material, that is backup material, and it's boarderline backup material. D'onta played 9 games not even 120 carries. Again not starting material.
Maybe Roschon can be that guy, but the team trusted him in 15 games w/81 carries. This isn't a WR or TE, RB is the easiest position to translate from college to the pro's. Need to bring in someone else b/c you cannot roll these 3 back and expect much better.
If Saquon Barkley becomes a FA. You bit the bullet and take him. Having a top 10 RB to help a rookie QB out while also using our #9 overall pick to get the best WR left.
This offense can look like something else.
There’s actually a YouTube guy who suggests keep Fields and add Barkley. Waldron loves to call play action passes and RPO. I know you don’t want Fields, but it would be hard to defend.

Does Poles really want to bet his GM career on Fields though? Fields is nothing special. If it turns out Williams is and he passed up on yet another starter quality QB. He will never see the GM spot again.

That would make a bunch more sense keeping Fields while adding someone like Barkley to the team. So many design plays can be created with a top 5 RB.
Still though, you can't pass up on a QB in this draft. Next year doesn't look so good and we might not have the #1 overall pick.

You know what's harder to defend?
An elite QB
I hope they listen to what Waldron wants here. Don't force Fields on him, but rather listen to what the new OC thinks gives the Bears the best chance of success building a solid offense here. Align all the O planets this time. With a D head coach, it's kind of like the Bears have an opportunity to match the new offense, OC and QB1 this time around. And I hope the Bears pull out all of the stops to give the offense everything they can for success. It won't be close to being perfect, but it can be a heck of a lot better than what we have had. It sounds like Waldron's offense had the weak link of a bad offensive line this past year in Seattle. This year put the best OL out there that you reasonably can. Harvest another stud WR in this draft class... it doesn't have to be Marvin Harrison Jr (it won't be if the Bears draft QB1) but get the best WR you can get (this class sounds LOADED with receiver talent). Want an elite QB? Then let's set up the new OC/QB1 with the best chance of success this time around. Player talent matters on offense. Bears have the draft and FA $$$ to seriously upgrade that side of the roster this time around. Just do it.

The odds of having the #1 pick 3 years in a row have to be astronomical. And if we did, it meant Fields had a horrid year and we went ~ 3-14 again.
