If both are available to us I hope we go with Newton.
Do we need another DT though? We just drafted 2 last year
Dexter has been coming on big time last month or so. Since David loves PFF stats, I saw a tweet recently that showed Dexter has outplayed Jalen Carter in terms of PFF grade over the last 6 games.
Dex was probably my least favorite pick last April so if he hits as well, Poles absolutely crushed that draft.

Dexter and Pickens both have pff grades in the 50’s. It is true that Carter’s has “slumped” down to 86.2 the last few games. Still highest PFF graded rookie in the NFL and odds favorite for Defensive Rookie of the Year. Yeah, Poles crushed it drafting Wright! I’ve been watching Broderick Jones lately. I think he’s playing better than Wright, although his PFF grade is only slightly better than Wright. Dewand Jones may be better than either of them — at least as a pass blocker.

Again, like with Tyrique, Dexter had a rough go at the outset. He played in a very different scheme in Florida and had to relearn a lot. Plus he didn't get much consistent PT early on. The scheme situation is why I wasn't too crazy about the pick when it was made but I will give Flus credit--the dude does seem to have a knack for developing defensive talent. [Wish the same could be said of Getsy but it can't.]
Judging these guys based on how they look in their first 8 games is a little short-sighted. Both Dex and Stevenson looked overwhelmed early on but have made impressive strides since. I haven't given up on Tyler Scott either though he hasn't shown the same progress the other two have so far.
Point is Wright, Stevenson, Dexter, and RoJo all look like future quality starters and that's pretty damn good.
At the very least, Poles didn't waste 1st round picks on RBs and ILBs like the morons in Detroit and Atlanta did.

I get your point, but I’m not there yet with these guys. Take Wright, for example. Of rookie tackles with at least 250 snaps, he is the leader in pressures and sacks allowed. Yet he was the first one off the board. He’s not near Brax’s rookie year grade. Morgan says he’s a hard worker, so we should see better production next year. JABF promises me.
Stevenson has 2 or 3 interceptions off tipped balls or wild passes from backup QBs. That’s nice but let’s be realistic about it. He also gave up the TD in the Cardinals game. He didn’t cover the guy and missed the tackle, so he scored. We can’t have many plays like that next year and win the North. I still say Terell Smith is playing better than him, and PFF backs me up.

He is 11 points better than Stevenson — a significant margin.

I see your point. I just try and factor in that every player is unique. They develop on different timelines. The game is so much more complex now at the pro level, that the transition from college ball to the NFL is steeper than ever before. And even in the past, offensive linemen in particular, needed more development time to reach their full potential. Nowadays that is so much MORE true. I have posted many times here that I see the linemen as not being the big/fat guys of the past but rather elite world class athletes engaging if a form of martial arts now - 320 pound men who are SO much more quick and powerful than ever before in the history of the sport. They engage in more sophisticated techniques than ever before. And OL are going against defenders and defenses now that are FAR better than anything they faced in college ball. It is like being in a different world at the NFL level. They say the OL positions are one of the most difficult positions now to master. And I 100% believe that.
So I figure the first two years are like we've seen Braxton Jones go through. Good plays mixed in with bad ones (Brax is the poster boy for this in every game this year). I think he is going to be a very good LT, but we are not seeing the finished product yet. Now, when we see veterans like Patrick and Whitehair looking bad - yes, they have no remaining ceiling and are in fact bad players now. But not the youngsters. Regarding Wright I am so blown away with is raw speed, quickness (yes foot speed too) and his power - for a rookie. I think he is All Pro at that RT position for years to come... but not in 2023, and probably not in 2024. But holy cow the guy is soooooooooooooo special. He has so much ceiling that those other dudes (like Borderick) simply don't have. Although Broderick Jones is a very good OL for sure. He just doesn't have Wright's ceiling.
We just need to let these youngsters learn their craft and hone their skills (no matter what position they play). That's just my take on it all. LOL, not saying I'm right about any of this :-)

Broderick Jones has allowed 3 sacks and 2 penalties in over 700 snaps. He doesn’t have a glaring weakness as far as I can see, and I’ve studied him in a few games. Wright has 7 sacks, 10 penalties, and allowed more pressures than any rookie tackle starter. You may be correct that he’s just slower adapting to NFL blocking technique, etc. You are trusting that next year he will leap up the learning curve ahead of all these others. I need to see it to believe it.

He is a good player without Wright's ceiling. JMO.

What is your method for predicting ceiling?
I see Wright as a terrific run blocker who has a problem with speed rushers in pass protection. You say he just needs better technique. I say his response time is slow. Jenkins was moved from tackle to guard for the same reason.
