My best and last hope for Fields is that he comes back the last 8 games of this season and really plays well on a consistent basis. I could see in that scenario enacting his 5th year option and giving him another year in 2024 with a new coaching staff and hopefully MHJr. If he still can't prove himself a long term franchise QB, then he's done for sure. He would have had a very fair and lengthy evaluation. No one could possibly complain the team didn't give him every chance to succeed.
That's all I'm saying. We have the guy for the last half of this season. Let's watch for ourselves and see what he does. Could be bad or good. But I want to see for myself.
I don’t give a damn how great Fields looks throwing TDs to Moore against the Cardinals and Panthers. I want to see how he stands up to the LIONS. That’s the acid test.
And that's what the last half of the season is all about. We get a lot of games to watch and see for ourselves if guys like Braxton Jones and Fields can look like long term solutions - or people who need to be upgraded.
But do you agree that beating up on weak teams doesn’t prove that Fields is the long-term solution? We have ALREADY seen that. I don’t need to see more of it against teams like Cardinals and Panthers. I want to see him against the LIONS. Even the Saints defense would have been a good test. I am with MP and others at this point on Fields. He just hasn’t shown enough improvement this year to convince me he’s the guy. I agree with Lorin Cox that, unless the Bears are certain about Fields, they should draft a QB.
I do not feel that way about Brax. I am comfortable with him, unless he comes back and plays poorly, especially against bull rushers. I don’t think that will happen.

Every player and every player situation is unique. Fields has had to overcome poor coaches and poor support players in previous years - to the point they were wasted as far as evaluating anything other than the fact the Bears continued to fail their drafted quarterbacks here. This season we had Getsy in his second year here, and arguably not quite as bad as a play-caller. And we had D.J. Moore, a great WR. The OL was horrific in the early games though... arguably worse than before. Regardless, Fields had 5.5 games before he was injured and Bagent took over in that 6th game.
So we have a half of a season to watch Fields play with a (now) better OL, hopefully a better Getsy calling plays. It "should" be a better opportunity to properly evaluate where Fields is, in his development. Certainly better than the opening games this year that were so bad. Better defense and offense. Hopefully a better Getsy too. But regardless I believe the last half of this season could reveal valuable evidence of where Justin Fields is at on his learning curve - and more evidence helps support making a better decision at the end of the year. So these games matter. At least that's my belief. I am a slow methodical guy. I value being thoughtful when making decisions (at least when time permits). We have the time. Fields is here for the last half of the season. Let's make certain we evaluate all of the evidence and then make an informed decision on him at the end of the season. That just makes sense to me.
Braxton Jones has not proven he's the guy we need at LT. He has shown some promising evidence, along with some bonehead plays too. This last half of the season matters with him also. I want to see evidence of improvement - just like I want to see in Justin Fields - in this last half of the season. JMO.

Hypothetically , let’s say they are both inactive for the rest of the season. Would you draft a QB in first round? Would you draft LT with the other first-round pick?

1) YES 2) Right now and subject to change as developments warrant, I'd draft MHJr with the other pick and if he's off the board, yes I'd draft LT.
Here's why: Both would help a rookie QB greatly. Borom is a goner this offseason so you need a T anyway. This pushes Brax down to the swing T role. The backup OT plays nearly every year. Rarely does a team have two tackles who both don't miss a single game. Brax would be a great swing T on a cheap contract.

Right. I know where you stand on these guys.
JABF is harder to decipher!
I'm not going to make up my mind until I see the rest of the season. I'm keeping an open mind. Both players will be back and we will get to see a lot of meaningful play. We won't have to guess, because we will know at that point. I believe either or both of these players could be good starters for us, or busts or something in-between. Let's just watch the season unfold and then make up our mind?

Also, I’m still trying to see how you are going to weigh these games. Nothing Fields could do against the Panthers next week would move the needle much for me. I am waiting for the LIONS games. Do you have any opinion on that subject?😌
Regarding Fields, I saw this tweet just now, and I think its a good reminder of his body of work:
"Justin Fields over his last 17 games...
90.9 QB Rating
3,088 passing yards
1,239 rushing yards
4,327 total yards
26 passing TD's
9 rushing TD's
35 total TD's
12 INT's
61.38% completion percentage
Ya'll sure you want to get rid of him?
Yes, because he's unfortunately a very inconsistent quarterback who can't read the field. Most of those stats are against garbage defenses. He hasn't shown any consistent ability against good teams. Nor has he shown any real growth. I doubt we'll see any significant change to that as the season goes on.
4300 yards of offense and 35 touchdowns ALL against "garbage defenses"...interesting. Didn't play even one decent defense in his last 17 games?

I’m leaning the same way, takes far too long to process the field and also to get the ball out. He can obviously light it up, but then he fumbles and tosses a bad interception costing us the game. Stats look great, but the end result was still a loss…. Have to see a lot of improvement over the rest of the year, before I’m ready to write him a check.
I must have missed all the talent on this team that was being held back by Fields...
