Gotta admit I love this guys attitude. He says something early in the video about his agent has probably been talking with the Bears about a contract. ESPN tonight, and Poles confirm this.
He also sounds like he really really really wants a long-term deal. After listening to Sweat's comments I'm thinking a deal gets done. Sweat's agent knows what the guy wants in a contract. The Bears have undoubtedly been talking to the agent (Sweat seems to think so, anyway). I've gotta believe Poles knows the cost and was willing to bring Sweat here knowing the cost of a contract with him.
I am climbing back off the ledge after hearing this. A deal will get done. Soon. I'm calling BS on the claims the Bears just brought the guy in blind with no general outline of what deal he will make. Courtney Cronin is a good/reliable news source and she is reporting tonight that a contract is being actively worked on - now:
LINK LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- One day after sending a 2024 second-round pick to Washington in exchange for edge rusher Montez Sweat, Bears general manager Ryan Poles said the team is in the process of working out a contract extension for the 27-year-old defensive lineman, who is playing on the final year of his rookie deal. "I feel really confident that we can get a deal done," Poles said.
Me too. I really wont take the premise that Ryan is an idiot. Cos I really dont think he is.
Deal is gonna get done, Sweat is just uppin his numbers, as he should. This contract will feed even his grandkids if they play it right.
That's a great way to look at it. This morning I was thinking that investing that 2nd round pick in Sweat was a good move because he is definitely worth a 2nd round pick. I'm so wanting the offense upgraded and maybe this move makes it more doable to spend those first round picks on offense next year - and still have that DL guy we needed, already in place.
We have a half-season left and that is a lot of football. I am so hoping Fields builds on those recent good games and shows he can be the guy we all hoped he would be when we drafted him. That could still be the case, and I base that on those two recent games where he was much improved. Yes his last game wasn't so good but the two before that showcased some good stuff. It's not crazy to think he could build on that with half of a season remaining.

Regarding Fields, I saw this tweet just now, and I think its a good reminder of his body of work:

"Justin Fields over his last 17 games...
90.9 QB Rating
3,088 passing yards
1,239 rushing yards
4,327 total yards
26 passing TD's
9 rushing TD's
35 total TD's
12 INT's
61.38% completion percentage
Ya'll sure you want to get rid of him?
I'm just going to watch what happens when he returns. I think there's a good chance he does very well. I'm also thinking that it may have done him some good to have watched a few games like this. The OL has settled down a bit. It was a train wreck to start the season, and Getsy just couldn't seem to get it together. But now I think we'll see some better games. Not just one but some stacked good games. The remaining schedule isn't THAT tough. At least that's my 2 cents worth.

Yes, because he's unfortunately a very inconsistent quarterback who can't read the field. Most of those stats are against garbage defenses. He hasn't shown any consistent ability against good teams. Nor has he shown any real growth. I doubt we'll see any significant change to that as the season goes on.

I’m leaning the same way, takes far too long to process the field and also to get the ball out. He can obviously light it up, but then he fumbles and tosses a bad interception costing us the game. Stats look great, but the end result was still a loss…. Have to see a lot of improvement over the rest of the year, before I’m ready to write him a check.

I don’t give a damn how great Fields looks throwing TDs to Moore against the Cardinals and Panthers. I want to see how he stands up to the LIONS. That’s the acid test.

Stats aren't that great actually. Less than 3100 yards passing over 17 games? That's 182 ypg -- nothing special.
I know people might say "he added another 1200 on the ground!". But the vast majority of that was last season and teams seem to have adjusted taking away his big chunk runs.
I'd add that I can't recall a single time he's taken his team on a "must have it" TD drive in the last 5 mins or so of the game to win. If it happened, I can't recall it so couldn't have been too memorable.
My best and last hope for Fields is that he comes back the last 8 games of this season and really plays well on a consistent basis. I could see in that scenario enacting his 5th year option and giving him another year in 2024 with a new coaching staff and hopefully MHJr. If he still can't prove himself a long term franchise QB, then he's done for sure. He would have had a very fair and lengthy evaluation. No one could possibly complain the team didn't give him every chance to succeed.

And that's what the last half of the season is all about. We get a lot of games to watch and see for ourselves if guys like Braxton Jones and Fields can look like long term solutions - or people who need to be upgraded.
