+1 about expected improvement in this 2nd year. A lot of mistakes have been made. And I also agree that it's going to be a couple of years to get this mess fixed - and that's assuming they can get the right people hired who CAN fix it. The Eberflus hire was a killer mistake.
2019 went south too but at least the defense was still good.
Right now, nothing is good outside of maybe the running backs.
Getting back to Flus, it's all the more infuriating when you recall he was basically hired by a committee and most of the members of that committee aren't even at HH anymore. Hoge reminded me of that on a recent podcast.
I sometimes think George likes candidates because they're "nice guys" and doesn't go deeper than that. It's really obvious at this point that Flus is in way over his head and Getsy & Fields are completely mismatched to one another like oil & water. It's a freakin' mess.
I completely agree with that. The team has been run as some "ma and pop business" with the family and Ted. I'm sure they are all "good people" but holy cow you shouldn't be running a multi-billion dollar sports franchise like that. It is insane. I get it. Back in the day, it was just George Halas with a $100 investment and the NFL wasn't even as big a deal as the modern USFL and XFL (which BTW announced they are merging for the spring season in 2024). But the NFL now is a huge pro sports league spreading internationally.
Our only hope in this is that Kevin Warren has the power AND ALSO the skills to transition the franchise into a modern sports team that can have sustained success. He is taking a franchise from the 1900's model into the 2020's model. Huge task. That's why I'm going to try and be positive and have a "wait and see" attitude no matter what he decides when the season ends. If Poles gets fired, hey fine. If he is retained then I am going to believe that Warren truly sees the guy as "The Guy" moving forward... a guy who can implement Warren's modern vision for the sports franchise.
It's a shame but I think most of the team will have to be flushed (I'm talking players now). This Lovie Smith defense has gotta go. I'm thinking a modern and successful defense will run best with a different profile of players at some of the positions. I doubt we get a 4-3 base guy again, but maybe I'm wrong. And on offense I think some players stay but others clearly need to be upgraded. riczaj01 absolutely nailed it in a post I remember reading yesterday or the day before where he said Bears fans tend to overvalue the O talent... thinking it is better than it truly is. It's not a new Bears fan phenomina. I think we've has such pitiful talent that even mediocre players seem like studs to us, e.g. Mooney or Braxton Jones come to mind... and I'm fully guilty of this too. I admit it. Anyway, Warren needs to get his GM/coaches in place and begin the new era from there. It's not going to be easy or quick I think. The Eberflus mistake just set this team back to zero again. It's a damned shame.
