Should be able to, but if his primary job is to set the edge and not pass rush, he will go from 12-15 to 5-6 and people will look at the trade and the contract as a bust.
Simple solution: Fire Eberflus and switch to 3-4 defense. Replace as many of Poles front-7 as needed. Get a good edge guy in the draft to complement Young. Maybe keep Billings as NT.
Why move to a 3-4? DC is a 4-3 also so bringing in Chase if you are moving to a 3-4 doesn't even make sense. Even if you are firing Flus, you don't know who you are hiring for certain, even if you have someone in mind, so you cannot start trading away and bringing in players for some imaginary future. This isn't Fantasy football, nor is this some thought process in the ivory tower. The real world doesn't work the way you think it does, and there is a good reason for it, reality and theoretically rarely meet.

I guess I misread what you are talking about re edge setting & sack potential for Chase Young with Bears.
I know that. But the clock is ticking on the trade deadline to get Chase or Sweat before the deadline next week. If you wait until you hire Eberflus replacement, they may be gone somewhere else, which takes me back to my earlier question why Poles doesn’t get the Pro Bowl caliber better players in trade/FA while Chiefs, Eagles, 49ers, Dolphins get them.

You don't even know if Flus is getting fired. My guess is Warren and Poles don't know that yet. Just b/c fans and media say it, doesn't make it so.

If they haven’t decided on Flus, then it is not relevant re trade deadline.

If the Bears make a move by Tuesday, I expect it to be with Washington for Young or Sweat. It makes too much sense for both teams. Obviously, any trade would have to have a contract extension along with it. These things are pre-negotiated. No team is trading a pick for a guy who walks away in a couple months. They are gonna want that guy locked down as part of the package.
Since Poles got burned by Claypool in a similar move last mid-season, I'm not sure if he has the balls to take another swing.

Poles thinks he is a genius in the draft. Obviously, he is not. But so long as he believes that, he will resist trading draft picks for players. His modus operandi is to trade his good players for genius draft picks who will play better than the guys he got rid of. The results are evident. I am hoping, as JABF expects, he will move up the “learning curve” next year and recognize that he is not any smarter than other GMs and become more inspired to invest draft picks and $$$ to acquire some Pro Bowl caliber players via trade/FA as the successful GMs of other teams have done (Eagles, Chiefs, 49ers, Dolphins). I’m not optimistic. I want a new GM.

Man, you really need to get over last year's teardown. That's what EVERY GM does in a teardown.
His draft this year looks promising. Can we move on?

+1 There are 10 games left. That is an eternity in a season. The Bears have started showing some improved play on offense and defense. We have no clue as to how the season is going to play out at this point.
