Ravens paid what he wanted, and Poles stuck on his own number which was less than market was willing to pay. I worry about that scenario repeating. And it doesn’t require JJ asking for a ridiculous salary — only what Poles is unwilling to pay and some other GM (Cowboys?) will pay.
Put another way:
Poles wasn't willing to pay market-resetting money to an off-ball LB who didn't cause many turnovers.
Market gets reset every year. NFL salaries go one direction. Roquan anchors the Ravens defense giving up 13.6 ppg.
As I said, in the end, this will come down to what Poles is willing to pay Vs. what some other GM will offer.
We should tell Dallas to go away, keep and pay JJ and move forward. Giving up young talent is ridiculous when we have so many holes. We’re just creating another one by trading him away.
Roq made it clear he wanted to "reset the market" and be the highest-paid at his position. If you recall, a knock on him was the very same as the one on JJ -- he didn't force as many turnovers as other "elite" players did.
JJ isn't talking like that. He wants to be well paid for sure but he isn't claiming to be the top CB in the league or asking for market re-setting money.
Roq was also a bit of a PITA off the field. He lost his playbook. He got caught partying with pornstars in public during Covid lockdowns. He held out (or "held in") TWICE. He refused to hire an agent. Then he went out of his way to throw shade at Family Fest by publicly saying the Bears weren't negotiating "in good faith" with him.
JJ has been a good soldier and not an off-field embarrassment.
Finally, Roq plays ILB; JJ plays CB. CB >> ILB in terms of impact. If you're gonna pay an ILB $20+M/yr, he better be taking the ball away a lot. It's simply a less premium position on defense.
IMO, unless JJ is quietly demanding ridiculous money, he's a no-brainer to re-sign. We aren't tearing down this year. We are rebuilding and he's a solid B+ starter at a key position who is only 24 yo.

Say it w/me now. Ravens are a 3-4 Def, Quan is a 3-4 ILB. Bears/Poles are a 4-3 def, Quan is a not a 4-3 MLB.
Read it, say it out loud so you can remember it.
At no point would ANY GM/HC/DC want Quan in the role of 4-3 MLB. Especially when they are wanting league redefining numbers in his contract.

again, 3-4 def, 3-4 mlb not the same as 4-3 def, 4-3 mlb. You'd have to be purposefully obtuse to not watch football for more then a few years and not understand this.

I think Poles keeps him, IF, Flus was a hybrid or 3-4 DC.
Question w/Johnson is, can he have enough success as an offball CB in a zone to justify offering what he deserves as man cover CB. Johnson might be another necessary cut/trade b/c he doesn't fit the def of the guy Poles hired.
Poles can be blamed for hiring Flus for that reason alone. But it is what it is at this point. I hope he keeps him, I hope he pays him, but I'll understand if he doesn't.
Quan didn't fit the scheme, everyone should understand that, everything about drafting him at the time they did was about is it worth drafting a 3-4 ilb top 10, it's not the same as a 4-3 mlb. it's harder to draft 4-3mlb's and 3-4 ilbs can be had later and be just as good.

At this point, there's very little chance Flus survives Black Monday. He would have to go on a massive win streak IMO. Its a parallel with Fields & Getsy. Unless Justin comes back and absolutely balls out the rest of the year, they are both gone.
Brad Spielberger was on CHGO yesterday and said: "if the Bears end up with a top-3 pick, either Carolina's or their own, Fields is done in Chicago".
Overall point is, a new coaching staff (and new QB) is likely on the horizon so I don't want to hear shit about "scheme fit". JJ needs to be re-signed period.
Few corners come in and dominate as rookies (as we are seeing with Tyrique who's gonna be good but is going thru the trial by fire right now) so if you give JJ away, you have to draft his replacement, with no guarantee of success, and then spend 1-2 seasons getting him up to speed.
At some point, you have to stop getting rid of good players. Even if they aren't "perfect". Most players aren't.

I don't think anyone that has any power has made any decisions on the coaches.
Brad S knows as much as any of us, and is waxing philosophical, nothing more.

He can read the writing on the wall as any astute fan can. You don't need a crystal ball to see where this is likely headed.
If Poles has a high draft pick in position for a QB, he's gonna take it. Poles isn't tied to Fields. He wouldn't be doing his job as a GM if he didn't take a shot at the most important position in the game if/when he has the opportunity.
Now if Fields comes back and balls out the 2nd half of the season and/or the Bears draft position falls dramatically, yeah things could change.
At this point, the most likely outcome is that Flus, Fields, and Getsy will not be Bears opening day 2024.

Yeah, I understand the difference. Ravens have a base 3-4 defense, but it’s a hybrid 3-4. They will rush 4 or even 5 sometimes. And to further confuse the offense, they have safety Kyle Hamilton roaming around all over the place. Have you watched their games?
Roquan Pff grade is 86. Edmunds is 52. Scheme notwithstanding, Roquan is just a better football player. I don’t get that from Pff. I get it from watching both of them.
