To be fair, Brady had the muscle definition of a 12 year old when he was coming out of college...so its no wonder he didn't have the strongest arm. His arm got stronger as he started to get stronger. Bagent is a pretty well put together kid who is strong already, so any increase in arm strength is going to have to come from mechanical adjustments.
Yeah, his Combine pic does make him look pretty soft. I don't doubt he got a lot stronger. But he has always obsessed with improving his throwing mechanics from the beginning of his NFL career. Even late in his career he obsessed with refining his mechanics. I admit I know nothing about QB mechanics, but just to my eye it sure looks like Bagent makes throws where his body isn't behind the throw and it sure looks like it's all arm strength without his feet even being set (sometimes not even on the ground on the release of the ball). Some of those passes just seem to lack velocity. I've got to believe that can be improved over time in the league. I do believe Brady improved his passing as he improved his mechanics.
Thats the price you pay for getting the ball out quick sometimes. You're not always gonna be in the optimal position. Plus he was able to get away with a lot at the D2 level...he's gonna have to learn some things.

I understand that, and I'm not trying to be hyper-critical at all. Mahomes does the same thing at times and obviously he's a great quarterback. I figure he's a smart guy who seems highly motivated to work hard to improve. So I have no doubt he will improve with time and experience too. But I would expect that as he refines his mechanics and delivery of the ball, we will see him throw with better power/velocity. This is a guy just beginning his NFL journey. Mechanics can be improved. But the mental gears are not as easy to improve. He seems to have been blessed with being able to process the game quickly. While the game can slow down for guys as they become more comfortable with the NFL game, I figure that every player has a mental processor that is a limiting factor at some point and it varies from player to player. Bagent seems to have the God-given mental CPU to process the game well.
I hope Bagent has a good game on Sunday. I'm just trying to keep my own expectations from getting too high, too fast with him. If he makes mistakes and struggles it won't mean he's a bum. It will just mean he's a rookie with a learning curve to climb. And if he's great on Sunday, well, that's fantastic. If that run game is stout and the defense is solid, then that will surely help him have another good game.

The odds of Bagent becoming a franchise starter are obviously very low. But they also aren't zero. That alone is a big win so far. Most backups that get rolled out there any given Sunday have zero chance.
I do think the chances of him becoming a solid #2 guy are pretty good. Again, that's a nice return on investment for a UDFA find.
His sample size right now is way, way too small to make any judgements. Heck, Fields is still generating hot debates and he's played dozens of games.

+1 That is EXACTLY my thought on it too. As fans we tend to overreact to small sample sizes. I am trying to not do that here with Bagent. I'm (as you point out) thinking it sure looks like we have a solid QB2 here. At least the chances of him being that are pretty good. I'm fine with that. If something even better happens, hey, I'm going to be mighty happy. But I'm not counting on it happening.

The odds of draft picks working out is very low, qb's specifically. Pro sports is an odd mix of athleticism and knowledge and the ability to use both simultaneously, and the special ones have an innate drive to work out even the most minor issues w/their abilities.
Bagent likely won't be a starting qb in the NFL, or even a backup. There are questions that need answered, his ability to deal w/how teams change how to stop him, and how he can adjust when he fails to do it. It's going to take more then 3-4 games, but man it was fun watching him succeed in a way Bears fans haven't much had a chance to do.

You would expect Chargers to put 8 up on the LOS to both contain the run (they suck at defending the run) and take away short throws for Bagent. It will be interesting to see if he can make some key intermediate and even deep throws to counter.
Will also be interesting to see if Getsy knows how to call that. Based on what we saw week1 and week6, I'm not confident Getsy can do it or will anticipate the adjustments LAC are likely to make. I could see the Bears O once again looking totally unprepared to start the game as my faith in Getsy thinking 2 steps ahead is LOW.
Regardless of the Bears QB situation next season, I want Getsy GONE.

It will certainly be interesting b/c Mack isn't going to allow the team the time to develop longer routes, and no doubt the LB's and DB's will be closer in. We'll have to see if Bagent can continue to pre read what the def is set in, and if the play call has a way to beat it. Thats what he did w/the Raiders so well.

Whoever lines up opposite Borom is gonna throw him around like a rag doll.
