Arm strength is gonna be an issue. I've looked at 2 reels of 2022 highlights and no deep passes.
He had a 45-50 yard hail mary last year at the end of a game, completed. He can, not sure if it's great, but he can. Brady and Brees weren't known for arm strength coming out either. You can learn it; but one of the reasons Brees was going to FL or NO's was for the weather b/c he knew he would struggle in the north w/the winters and poor weather.
Top QB Ratings and T2T Purdey 119 2.6, Tua 110.4 2.37, Jackson, 101.9 2.79, Mahomes 101 .93, and Allen 100.7 2.98.
The Key is getting that ball out under 3 seconds consistently. Mahomes and Allen take deep shots throughout the game, but it's not the majority of the plays, just the highlights. It's what Fields needs to learn.
+1 And also, protect the football. Get it out fast and don't turn it over with fumbles and interceptions. Half of the equation is getting the ball out fast, and the other half is to not do turnovers.
These defenses are so good now that no OL is going to be able to consistently provide protection. I liked how Bagent avoided sacks without turning the ball over. Fields is into his 3rd NFL season and he still struggles in these areas. It is so sad to watch him repeat these mistakes.

Ric, you read my mind there... that was the knock on Tom Brady in particular. I remember (very well) how people were saying he lacked the arm strength to be a good QB at the NFL level. Obviously, he never needed a cannon for an arm.
All of us here have seen a small army of cannon-arm college kids come to the NFL and crap the bed due to them not having the mental gears to process the game fast enough, and accurately enough (realtime processing). That was Tom Brady's strength. Brady had the mental gears that were elite.
I'm not saying Bagent has this, but he did seem to process the game quickly and accurately - getting the ball out fast, yesterday. I have no clue if he can do this consistently. But he has PLENTY of arm strength to be good at the NFL level if he does possess that mental processing speed of the game. That is what makes elite QBs elite. It is what made Tom Brady elite... not the muscle-arm phenom stuff. Although Brady worked very hard on his mechanics AND DID improve his arm strength during his career. But initially he was nothing special. Heck, we've had the strong-arm guys who were mental midgets here. Those guys are a dime-a-dozen. But elite processing speed of the game is the rare key. Few have that. Bagent might.
On the other hand, why risk an interception in the kid's first game? Flus being considerate maybe? On the other hand, if he managed the few plays before that properly, we wouldn't have needed a hail mary.
Ric, the Raiders 29th in the league against the rush, and 23rd in the league in total yards given up. They're 22nd in the league in points per game given up...that defense is pretty freakin bad. Crosby is a stud though.
They also really haven't played any good running teams. The Bears are actually probably the first team they've played with the running game to show how bad they really are against it.
that is as of today after the game when the other games haven't finished. They weren't that during/before the game. Trust me, I looked, multiple times b/c I couldn't believe it myself. They were on the opposite end of the standings as the Bears
I'll take your word for it on that. I just checked defensive DVOA...Raiders were 23rd last week, and are now 25th. I'm just saying, they aren't a good defense outside of Crosby, who is a game wrecker. I just wish Getsy was able to figure this out last week, instead of thinking it was a good idea to open up in an empty set.

To be fair, Brady had the muscle definition of a 12 year old when he was coming out of college...so its no wonder he didn't have the strongest arm. His arm got stronger as he started to get stronger. Bagent is a pretty well put together kid who is strong already, so any increase in arm strength is going to have to come from mechanical adjustments.

Yeah, his Combine pic does make him look pretty soft. I don't doubt he got a lot stronger. But he has always obsessed with improving his throwing mechanics from the beginning of his NFL career. Even late in his career he obsessed with refining his mechanics. I admit I know nothing about QB mechanics, but just to my eye it sure looks like Bagent makes throws where his body isn't behind the throw and it sure looks like it's all arm strength without his feet even being set (sometimes not even on the ground on the release of the ball). Some of those passes just seem to lack velocity. I've got to believe that can be improved over time in the league. I do believe Brady improved his passing as he improved his mechanics.
