Thats all fine and true, but did he have to be "honest" in the presser? Couldnt he camouflage, like others cover for him? Media will take it and run with it. And if he was or is a smart guy, shouldnt he have predicted it? I guess he is too busy thinking about which glasses to wear on Sunday.
Why...do the coaches camouflage for him? Have they not been open in the things he needs to improve on or doesn't do well? And not for nothing...this is nothing new from Fields. He's always been very open and honest on his play and why he does things...why wouldn't we expect honesty from him on this. And its not like he didn't hold himself responsible either. He shared the blame.
Not sure I get the bolded part of your response.
Overall, I'm not absolving Fields of blame with his play. He needs to be better. But this coaching has been absolutely TERRIBLE. The game planning and play calling is baffling, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what Fields strengths are currently and to lean in to those things.
My broken record comment: This team — and Fields style of play — is built for running the ball. Getsy figured that out last year and the Bears lead NFL in rushing, as Fields ran for 1,100 yards. You suck in the defense to stop the run, then hit Moore in the open zone over the middle. Simple. That’s something Fields can actually do very well, but that’s the offense nobody except me wants. It is the Eagles offense. They ran 259 yards last week. If Poles, et al. knew what the hell they’re doing, they could bring in the players 2024 draft to run this offense as well or better than Eagles, because Fields is a better runner than Hurts.
Dan's initial quote kind of misrepresents what Fields was saying, but besides that, I don't really think Fields said anything wrong. This is his career, he's got to feel like he's got some control of his fate.
As for his "coaching" comment and receiving too much "data" or info, he's got a point. I liken it to cueing an athlete on their sprint technique. If I give that athlete too many things to think about at one time they are ONE HUNDRED PERCENT going to run a SLOWER time. 100% without a doubt. And they're likely to not achieve many of the things I asked them to think about. Many of the best coaches don't talk often during training. When the athlete is "in it", they kind of have to help themselves, and too much from me could hurt performance more. They have to feel whats wrong and problem solve. Justin is essentially saying that!
Beyond that, sometimes you just have to leave well enough alone. Don't get so caught up in making sure everything is technically perfect if the athlete is getting the job done at a higher level. Tim Jenkins did a great job breaking this down in regards to Fields footwork on the Hoge and Jahns podcast. I recommend everyone give it a listen. What works for one QB doesn't mean it works for EVERY QB.
I love that post. And the Hoge and Jahns podcast you mention there (with Tim Jenkins with them) is excellent.

Some of that needed to be said. Eberflus and his staff seem to be in over their head a bit. I think Getsy is a bad coach. Period. I don't like his offense. I don't like his play calling. And a lot of us have been talking about how he seems to have made Fields worse. We have seen Fields play worse these last two games. The coaches are here to develop these guys' talent not mess them up. But this is Chicago. This is pretty much how the Bears roll here.

Agree with you completely and saw the same H&J video.
If there's ANY chance to salvage Fields, I want them to try it right now. The whole freakin' point of this season is that,
I could care less if the coaches like it or not. And BTW, I doubt this was just "out of the blue". I'll bet there have been discussions behind the scenes and I'll bet that higher authorities (Warren? Poles?) placed some calls to the coaches telling them to get with the program or they're fired at the mini-bye.
So Fields is admitting he can't process the info and needs to play street ball is what that sounded like. Bye Justin. That will never work at this level of competition.
In effect, yes he is.
But if there's any chance to turn this around, I want them to take it. If he fails again, he fails. At least then you KNOW YOU TRIED.
Lamar Jackson is the template. It took quite a while to improve in the pocket and he still isn't elite at it.
But he's elite overall. That is Fields last shot remaining.
Oh and btw, these coaches aren't exactly Bill Walsh and Bill Bellicheck. They don't have any real accomplishments to stand on or political capital to spend. I don't give a rat's ass about their egos or "feelings".

Winner winner, chicken dinner!!
And none of the current Bears management/ownership deserves concerns as to egos or feelings. All of these folks are paid to do their jobs (and paid pretty f'ing well). When you take one of this high profile, big paying jobs, something comes along with it. It's called accountability. Get used to it.
The QBs we have on the roster are the QBs we have. Deal with it and make work, somehow. If you don't like it, quit.

Yeah, that's why I have little tolerance for the pearl-clutching talking heads on TV and the internet who are gnashing their teeth over Fields "showing up his coaches".
They deserved it.
What exactly have these guys accomplished that warrants kid glove treatment with the media? Both these guys (now that Williams has mysteriously been shown the door) are a dime-a-dozen. There's plenty of others out there who could and would take their place in a New York minute. No one would shed a single tear if they both got canned.
Getsy's O has looked like ass most of his time here. Flus' D has too. Yes, little was expected last season understandably but it has carried over into this one as well and YEAH THAT'S IMPORTANT.
Until these clowns actually start winning lots of games, they can shove their ruffled feathers right up their ass.
PS: Justin Fields is NOT a diva. He's not a punk. This is a guy who gets up at 5am to do a Bible devotional before hitting the gym. He lives and breathes his faith and football. When it comes to character, he gets the benefit of a lot of doubts in my mind. Way more than Dumb & Dumber on the sidelines do. Point is, yesterday's events didn't just happen on the spur of the moment. This has been brewing for a while (as CHGO talked about yesterday in detail). I'm quite confident someone--maybe Poles, maybe Warren, maybe both--placed some calls beforehand and laid down the law. Those two clowns were headed toward firing at the mini-bye (after week 5) and they still might be. I'm sure they were TOLD that things need to change right now.
BTW, the usual Wednesday presser is ALWAYS the coach talking and then the QB. Yesterday they reversed the order to allow Fields to talk first. That came from above, guys. This was planned and orchestrated. Flus and Getsy were told to go along or resign.

From what I have seen, I like Justin Fields as a person. He is serious about how he lives is life and goes about his craft.
I don't think that we really know if his or can be a decent QB in the NFL. While it's not fair to Fields, I think it is approaching the point where that is not going to matter. And, to repeat, that is really not fair.
