A “total no-brainer” for one side is probably a “sucker deal” for a GM who offers that trade, unless he’s lucky enough to land an All Pro QB.
I don’t know what the chart says, but I am taking Will Anderson at #3, unless they give me top-10 plus their second in 2023 and their first and third in 2024. You can scoff at the mock drafts, but they are usually in the ballpark in predicting the players who will go very early. I will bet that Anderson and Carter will go top-5. Just this week, I saw Max Crosby and Myles Garrett get game-ending sacks at the absolutely critical play in the game. A star edge rusher like them or Donald will win games for you. I hope Poles gets that and wouldn’t trade down from #3, unless it’s a huge sucker deal.
Would any of us be complaining about trading up to #2 if Pace had taken Mahomes instead of Trubisky? Of course not.
I'm completely with you that we need "star" level talent on both O and D. I just don't think we are one guy away by any means. And I also disagree that you can't find that talent picking #10 or even #15. Lots and lots of great players were drafted outside the top-5.
I want to replace 5 of the current front-7 on defense, and Anderson or Carter would be a great foundational piece to build upon. If Poles doesn’t do this, we are going to be next year right where we were for the four games before the Fields injury — scoring 30 points per game and getting beat anyway because Poles utterly destroyed the defensive front-7 in 2022 to achieve what JABF calls a “soft tank.”
Mission accomplished!
