Regardless, they should play Leatherwood last few games because 2022 is a sunk cost and we are in full tank mode now, no doubt about it. If he looks like garbage, then cut him and move on. Someone will pick him up for 2023 I'm sure. Even if not, find out if he has any game or not.
Borom isn't good, David. He lost his job to Reiff who's 10 years older than him. Point is, RT is now clearly a major need on the OL (that plus Center being my top-2). You can't count on Borom starting for 2023. Maybe you can find a guy in FA who won't break the bank but more likely this is a Day 2 draft pick.
All the more reason to trade-down. You could easily get an extra 2nd in a trade down (among other picks) and there's your new RT.
Yes, trading down could get you a second round right tackle. I am NOT doing that at the expense of losing a shot at Will Anderson in the first round, and I bet other GMs will draft him (and Carter) in the top-5 rather than trade down. Look at what Micah Parsons is doing for the Cowboys, or what Chase Young did for the commanders in his rookie season. Bears desperately need a super star impact player like that on this defense, and 2023 will be our last chance in the foreseeable future to realistically get one, unless Poles someday does something like Pace did to get Mack, and I am sure you don’t want that.
Borom came in for Reiff when RR hurt his shoulder. And he sucked. Braxton Jones has way outplayed Borom IMO this year and Jones is a rookie. I'm not saying Borom should be cut or anything, just that you can't count on him being the 2023 starter. Maybe he gets a look at LG because Whitehair is out of guaranteed money and has a hefty cap hit next year.
As far as draft order goes, Bears are almost assuredly picking top-10 and very likely will fall into the top-6 (https://tankathon.com/nfl). Top-4 is a realistic possibility. If we lose out, we are probably #2 or #3. Personally, I feel the 2022 Bears are way more than one "super star impact player" away from being a good team and yesterdays game shows that. Without Fields out there, the Bears are clearly one of the least talented teams in the league. We barely beat the least talented, Houston, on a last minute FG at home.
Be really hard for me to pass up a trade offer from a QB-needy team and there's gonna be a lot of those picking after us. Even a modest trade down from ~ #4 to #8 would get you a top-10 player + an extra high pick.
