2023 offseason mock thread: FA & Draft

Agree. Borom hasn’t been the same since his last concussion. I believe he had one last year and 2 (?) so far this year. I’m concerned he’s not healthy and may not be viable long term. I wouldn’t compare him to Jones being it’s two different guys playing 2 different positions. I will easily concede the Jones has been a bright spot considering his draft position and then playing left tackle arguably the toughest spot on the oline. 

The team has an immense amount of holes to fill. While it pains me to trade the low draft pick, it’s looking more and more like it’s necessary. I just hope they maximize the trade and not get enough for it.

I just watched the whole game again and only looked at Borom. He did not suck. He allowed two pressures and one sack. The sack was an odd play where it looked like Borom thought a run play was called or something. He moved to his left at the snap, which allowed Huff to get the sack untouched. I don’t know what happened on that play, but it looks like he blew his assignment. The rest of the game, he as blocking Huff and others without a lot of trouble. Incidentally, Reiff was beaten badly off the snap on Bears second and goal pass play.

You guys also never give Borom any credit for his run blocking. He has very good power, and was blowing people off the line on run plays.

If Reiff and Borom can’t play against the Packers, I would move Jenkins out to tackle, not play Leatherwood. LG would then be a problem, but not as bad as playing Leatherwood at LT.

If Poles can buy a good RT in FA, I would be fine with that, but I am not trading down for a second round pick.

As you like to say, it is premature to get into draft trade scenarios until we know the draft positions of the teams, People around here seem to think it is a no-brainer that some sucker GM is going to give us a Trey Lance or RG3 kind of sweet deal to move up. More often than not, nobody trades out of those top positions. Theoretically, if we were at #5 and Anderson and Carter were already off the board, I might trade down to #8 to still get WR1, but that’s all hypothetical at this point.

You are the guy who reminds us that Poles can’t clean up his mess in one more year. So, he needs to put his resources into the areas of greatest need in 2023 and fill in the rest in 2024.

Granted, Borom has his limitations, but he is not nearly as bad as this whole DL. Therefore, fixing the DL is the higher priority.

I just checked the 2023 FA market for RT. There are 17 guys there, and several would be a clear upgrade to the position. I would guess that most of the best will be resigned, but if you don’t do the 5th year option, there is a chance that at least one of them will hit the open market. In that case, Poles has the money to outbid anybody and make the guy a $$$ offer that would be hard to refuse. The same applies to getting a center to replace Mustipher.

But, if Poles stay true to “building through the draft,” we are not likely to find an elite edge rusher or our WR1 in free agency. We need to save those precious first and second round picks for them, not an upgrade to Borom. Of course, I have no objection to drafting linemen in rounds 3-7, and he might get a lucky hit there like Braxton Jones.

You make it sound like a trade down doesn't still leave you with a good pick.  Not true.

Big trade-ups in the 1st round aren't that common.  KC did it for Mahomes and we did it for Fields.  But both of those were move-up to about #10 or so (I'd say both are looking pretty wise right now).  

When trading up into the top-5, the moves are usually smaller because they're so much more expensive.  Please consult a draft chart if you don't believe me.  Moving up from #7 to #3 is way more costly than moving from #16 to #12.  

Point is, I'm taking a deal like the former in a New York minute.  You mean I still get a top-10 player PLUS an extra 1st?  Or even more?  Yeah, I'm doing that deal.  Total no brainer.
