This is one point that I have tried to make. Fit matters, especially with some players in particular. Carter is obviously immature. He is high risk, high reward. Hey, he could end up as a great player. But that doesn't mean he was the best player for the Bears to draft. Fit matters... I have always thought that if Patrick Mahomes had come to the Bears instead of to KC, he would not be the super star he is right now. Fit matters. Carter is far better off where he is now (Eagles) and it was best for him and best for the Bears. Both.
If Carter does well, hey, I wish him luck. But I won't regret the fact that Poles chose to not bring him here. Those fans who wanted Poles to "gamble" on Carter (the high risk thing) would be the first meatballs wanting Poles fired if Carter got in trouble and was out of the NFL like Henry Ruggs II, or like the countless other NFL players we seen over the years who wrecked their career getting into trouble off the field. Fit matters. We are just getting our 1st year in the books (of the rebuild)... we don't need to gamble right now. We need for Poles to hit on these high picks right now. mpbears68 (I think it was MP) who said get high floor guys. That's what we got in wright, arguably, the best OL in this draft.
I was a huge fan of Mahomes when he was in the draft. But in retrospect, I am happy for his sake he went to the Chiefs. If we got him, he might be well down the road to being the next Jay Cutler instead of a virtual guarantee to end his career as one of the top 5 all-time great QBs.
first off, that is a gorgeous dog. Also 1000% agree. Mahomes starts year 1 in Chicago, he has said he needed that year to watch and learn. Also he doesn't have Hill/Kelce/Watkins as his main goto's and relief valve, nor the OL that KC had for him. Alex Smith looked like a legit franchise qb w/that team the year prior, and in DC he looked like the guy he was in SF; that's how good the team around the QB was.
Bears bring out all the worst flaws in Mahomes or any QB they bring in. KC was set up to bring out all the best qualities in any qb they brought in.
*edit, the dog is Dach's, my back is ded and I'm pretty fuckecd up on bourbon to try and kill the pain.
It sounds to me like Poles had questions/issues with Cater's maturity and he basically says that Wright was a better fit for the Bears locker room and that Carter will land in a better place with a more mature locker room with existing strong leadership.

We just couldn't take a chance on a player like Carter who had high risk and bust potential. Philly could take that risk and has a veteran locker room to minimize it.
Quinnen Williams unhappy, wants a 25-30M AAV contract, probably 4 years. Would you trade 1 of our 1sts for him? The DT spots are filled.
He's tagged, no?
I think he's just angling for a contract from the Jets and doubt he's available. And, as good a player as he is, I'm not trading away a 1st. We need those 2 FRPs next for
A) a QB if Fields fails in 2023 or B) a WR and/or Edge if he doesn't

He's 25 years old and a 1st team All-Pro this past season. The Jets have invested a #3 overall pick of the draft in getting him. My gut feeling is that he will get a contract from the Jets and stay there.
This is probably going to sound crazy but I'd pass on him and use our draft picks to bring in that kind of talent (not necessarily a DT) on a cheap rookie contract for the next 4 (or 5 years with the 5th yr option). I get the argument to bring in a proven All-Pro veteran instead of taking on the risk of drafting a young player. But you're probably paying ~$120mil for a four year contract for Williams. I'd just use the two 1st round picks we have and draft a couple of elite players ourselves.
Not really worth a thread but Jets DE Huff might be available via trade. Had the best pressure % in the NFL.
It looks to me like we may have some excellent edge prospects coming in next year's draft. Unless Poles and his staff feel really strongly about trading for someone specifically right now, I'd rather get someone with a couple of good years left in the tank and who aren't going to become a long-term cap issue. My current favorite is Justin Houston. Currently an unsigned FA. He can play OLB and DE is good at stopping the run as well as the pass. He has averaged 7 sacks, 27 combined tackles and 17 QB hits a year over the last 2 years. He has personal connections to Poles (spent most of his career at the Chiefs) and Eberflus (played for him when he was a DC at the Colts). I don't know if he is a great fit for the Bears current defense, but he comes pretty cheap (last contract was a cap hot of $3.5 million).
Poles seems to prefer getting as many starters under rookie 4 year deals as possible. Assume for discussion that Fields really blossoms under the current mgmt and coaching staff. We are going to have to pay some real $$$ to keep him.
The better we manage our cap now, the greater flexibility we have over the next 2 or 3 years.

I'm kind of thinking along the same line. We went into this year knowing we couldn't fix the entire roster in 1 year. Poles is playing long ball here. No need to mortgage the future... because the team is probably an ~8 win team this year no matter what he does now. 2024 may be the year to address remaining needs now.

Yep as if we’re going to pay the man, we need to be prepared to do so while minimally impacting the team.
