This morning it is being reported that he has let himself go and is overweight and out of shape conditioning-wise. Certainly, he can still turn this around and have an NFL career. But think about this. He already has all of this other baggage (legal, emotional and maturity issues). And now he's let himself go physically too. I'm sure you recall he got so winded at his pro day that he had to stop... couldn't even complete a workout at practice that day.
Could he still turn this all around? Sure. But holy cow I'm glad the Bears did not roll the dice with their 1st round pick and bring this guy to Chicago. This guy is the poster boy for high risk. And I'm not buying into him being high reward at all. Like some other physically gifted NFL players from the past, I think this guy will never even sniff his ceiling potential. I could also see the possibility of him ending up the way of Henry Ruggs.
All the mental/physical issues can be transitory. As I have said before, if I got into a drag race with an obviously drunk woman and two people died, I would still be suffering from guilt and remorse 60 days later… in no mental/physical condition to play football. This will be remembered forever, but that doesn’t mean he can’t pull out of it.
My only point is that I am glad Poles did not take unnecessary risks by bringing him to Chicago. I hope Carter pulls out of this and does well. But holy cow, we are not in a position to gamble with our 1st round draft picks right now. We need Poles to hit on these in particular. And our locker room is so young. Build the roster with high character people who are also talented people. You can strive to build your franchise with young men who have both qualities. Build a healthy culture of hard working, dedicated young men of high character.

For reasons stated, I think the “character “ accusations overstate the “risk” and Carter is more likely Warren Sapp 2.0 than Henry Ruggs 2.0. The talent justifies the risk. We’re going to find out who’s right about Carter, and there will be a plate of hot crow awaiting somebody….maybe me.
Eagles and Carter need to be more worried about the $40 million dollar lawsuit Carter was just named a defendant in for the death of Devin Willock. This is a nothingburger compared to that.
Civil litigants always ask for huge amounts of money, almost always much more than they end up getting.
Besides, I’m not even sure he will lose the case. Willock decided to get in the car driven by a woman with blood alcohol .197 and she drove 104 mph, slamming into the curb to cause the crash. I’m sure Carter’s lawyer will mention that to the jury .
I see that the university, the estate of the woman driver, and others are named as defendants.

I saw that too. And while flashing gang signs on social media doesn't mean the guy's a member, or another budding Aaron Hernandez - it's not a good look for the guy or the franchise, to say the least. My only point is that I'm thankful Poles did not draft the guy.

I was just listening to a replay of the most recent Bernstein & Holmes show on WSCR. They had a segment where they were doing a phone interview with Poles and were specifically talking about the decision on drafting Jalen Carter vs drafting Darnell Wright. It is in the following video starting around 06:00.
It sounds to me like Poles had questions/issues with Cater's maturity and he basically says that Wright was a better fit for the Bears locker room and that Carter will land in a better place with a more mature locker room with existing strong leadership.

This is one point that I have tried to make. Fit matters, especially with some players in particular. Carter is obviously immature. He is high risk, high reward. Hey, he could end up as a great player. But that doesn't mean he was the best player for the Bears to draft. Fit matters... I have always thought that if Patrick Mahomes had come to the Bears instead of to KC, he would not be the super star he is right now. Fit matters. Carter is far better off where he is now (Eagles) and it was best for him and best for the Bears. Both.
If Carter does well, hey, I wish him luck. But I won't regret the fact that Poles chose to not bring him here. Those fans who wanted Poles to "gamble" on Carter (the high risk thing) would be the first meatballs wanting Poles fired if Carter got in trouble and was out of the NFL like Henry Ruggs II, or like the countless other NFL players we seen over the years who wrecked their career getting into trouble off the field. Fit matters. We are just getting our 1st year in the books (of the rebuild)... we don't need to gamble right now. We need for Poles to hit on these high picks right now. mpbears68 (I think it was MP) who said get high floor guys. That's what we got in wright, arguably, the best OL in this draft.

I was a huge fan of Mahomes when he was in the draft. But in retrospect, I am happy for his sake he went to the Chiefs. If we got him, he might be well down the road to being the next Jay Cutler instead of a virtual guarantee to end his career as one of the top 5 all-time great QBs.
