My only knock on Turner is that it feels like a retread instead of finding the next rising star. On the other hand, a rising star might get picked off to be a HC where as Turner should have that out of his system by now.
The offer should be for the final two years of Fox's deal. Any extensions beyond that will have to be earned. The current staff including Fangio are under contract through 2018 anyway so those we don't fire are somewhat compelled to stay and I feel most will.
But then we have to find an OC who'll accept a two year deal and that may limit us somewhat right there. A rising star working for someone else may not want to take that risk whereas Turner is looking for his next job and we have one that fits him.
In the short run his experience should be invaluable because we can't afford another OC who leaning as he goes like Loggains. He's as inconsistent as Jay. That's the part we need to move on from not his talent but I'm not sure even Turner can fix that.
Part of the issue is that it is not a given that coaches will come here. I know us fans like to think that anyone offered the job here would jump at the opportunity. But a truly solid coach prospect may have a better opportunity on another team. This is a dysfunctional franchise and has been for many years now. I actually think that began when we let Jim Finks go. Yes, we won a Super Bowl with Finks' players a few years after he was gone. But the franchise never fully recovered when the franchise chose Ed & then Michael McCaskey to run the team and Hall of Fame GM Jim Finks was allowed to leave.
I'm not sure a top candidate would really want to come here now. Sure, a young unproven coach can always be hired. We've tried that in the past. So far it's not worked though.
