This imo has everything to do w/the Mc's and Phillips. They claim they have nothing to do w/personnel or on the field stuff. But I'm not buying it anymore. You've now had 3 HC's, a myriad of OC's and DC's, and 3 GM's and all end up failing in similar ways. There's been a complete neglect at the most important position on the field since Orton, in the 4th, and Rex in the first, going on a decade now. Teams w/far better QB situations haven't been that neglectful; only Indy(who had a HoF'r), NY and SD have similar time frames.
W/JA you could understand he gave so much up for Cutler he had to give him every shot. But the last 2 GM's have stated they wanted to draft a qb in the first 3 or 4 rounds every year...but haven't. Why not? The ability was there, the talent was there but they skipped.
Not just Cutler though, it's good that they at least admit they don't know much about the very business they are in, but they cannot even hire competent outside sources to help them get the job done correctly. That has led them down the Emery road, which meant passing on a far more qualified HC for a guy like Trestman. That meant hiring a young inexperienced Pace who they apparently wanted to hedge on by giving him the silver Fox to help him along.
All of this has lead to such a lack of talent and stability, that now even though they have talent(roster is completely turned over in the last 2 years minus a handful of players) that there is still no improvement on the field week to week.
We have to stop blaming GM's and HC's for play on the field. I warned against that w/Trestman and I'm saying it again; even w/better talent, there is no depth, and you saw that today. The game was close even w/Cutler choking as bad as I've ever seen him. It wasn't until the OL took multiple hits that things fell off the hinges. And the DB's were terrible, but they aren't exactly healthy either. Pace/Fox and co. have barely had a chance to get 22 legit starters, let along depth, and let alone quality youth up and down the roster. Larsen for F's sake is now a starter and Massie while not great is still 1000x's better then his backup.
As much as I don't like Fox, he's a arrogant D-bag that thinks he's got the weight of Bellechik to be a dick to the media; shit even Lovie waited until he had accomplished something and was on his last leg before that schtick. But changing things again isn't going to help. They need at least another 1 or 2 drafts to start building a core of young talent(not FA's) and probably another year to build up the back end of the rosther also.
really think about it. Where is the young drafted depth on the team; RB and WR, and maybe interior OL(if Grassu sticks at OG/OC), even then the depth is weak w/the OL. The DB's maybe, but way to early to tell. ILB/OLB/DL has a lot of vets and low in quality outside of Goldman and maybe, MAYBE, Bullard and Floyd. There is no young quality QB, there is no young quality TE, CB is a huge issue, RT/swing OT is a huge issue, backup OG/OC is a problem also.
This team, while it has some big names up front, is always still an injury away from disasters like today; and today it was multiple. This was always a barely .500 team, things had to go right; no near perfect to get 8-9 wins, they were never going to win 10.
The team needs to start looking at future presidents to run this org, b/c Philips should be on his last GM, he cannot be allowed to hire another. And this time the pres has to be an NFL guy someone that actually knows the profession and can run the team for the Mc's, who are clueless.
That the McC's and/or Phillips actively prevented multiple GMs from drafting a QB?
The theory is that they are inserting themselves far more into this then they want anyone to know. Cutler/QB is just an example. When Lovie was on his streak of 7 to 9 wins, it was being reported that one of the reasons he was going to be safe was that Virginia really like Lovie on a personal level.
