Nobody ever said Phillips is calling plays etc. But his actions and decisions definitely affect the team. Does the name McGinnis ring a bell? Like Arians, he was an HC we tried to hire but screwed up and drove him away. We got jauron instead.
Those two decisions haven't affected the team either, I guess.
I believe we got Trest instead of Arians, not that it matters.

It was Trestman and I don't think they pushed Arians away, I think they just wanted Trestman over him.

Yes, that's what I was saying we got Trestman instead of Arians, and Jauron instead of McGinnis.

I recollect they (Emery?) wanted Arians to do a mockup press conference. That and other meddling things chased Arians away. He said as much later on. They then settled for Trestman, the guy with the calendar all filled out all the way to the super bowl.
From the Tribune:
For one, (Arians) was asked to do a mock news conference in the course of his interview. Apparently it wasn’t enough that he was the reigning coach of the year after taking over the Colts and had been doing news conferences all year.
The mock news conference was a variation on the actual news conferences that the Bears requested of Smith and runner-up Russ Grimm in 2004 after failing to come to terms with Nick Saban. The message is that perception matters as much as performance to the Bears.
Arians was also skeptical of the Bears’ request that Rod Marinelli remain as defensive coordinator, Mulligan wrote. That sentiment echoed an Arizona Republic report earlier in the week that quoted Arians as saying, “It seemed awkward in Chicago because they wanted me to keep some of their (assistant coaches), which wasn’t going to happen.”

OK, I lied, one more post, unless I can't help myself. I'm bored but need to stop before I reach trolling level.....
Wasn't McGinnis run off by Michael McCasky...who got fired and replaced by Phillips? Does Phillips get knocked for decisions he wasn't involved in?
There are posters here claiming Phillips pushed Fox to go back to Cutler. The rest is hyperbole to make a point.
Don't remember if McGinnis/Jauron was McCaskey or Philips, the point was the pres's decisions affected the team on the field by getting the wrong GM and/or coach.
