I don't disagree with the notion that we knew this was going to be a hard match for the OL BUT it doesn't change the fact that they got eaten alive AND that they were, in my opinion, the key contributing factor to why we lost the game.
Just because it's expected and then it happens doesn't mean it's not a problem.
One player I didn't expect to be eaten alive was Leno and he looked pretty bad against Clowney. Pretty miserable.
You can help guys like Leno by mitigating the rush use a bubble screens move the pocket. I saw nothing that helped anyone have a chance, yes they are going to get beat just don't accentuate the flaws by having dumb ass game plan.
You help the OL by throwing passes in 3 to 3.5 sec's, short quick passes that don't allow the rush, no matter how good, to ever get there. That isn't Cutlers game b/c he likes to see the WR open before throwing to them.

It was a glorious down in the second half when Cutler had 3 - 3.5 seconds to throw.
I know the coaching staff made some errors (some big errors) but you also need players who can execute. Massie and Leno didn't execute often. Sitton and Long didn't seem to have many issues when manned up against Watt, Mercilus or Clowney. Yet, whenever they targeted Leno or Massie it was sack dance time.
I know they had a tall order today, but they didn't come anywhere close to meeting that order. I think they will continue to grow BUT for today they get the deflated ball. I don't think it's even close.
I just saw the game and I am going to make a couple of observations.
1) I thought the OL played well until the later part of the game. Just allowed too many sacks at that point. 2) Does Loggains know what he is doing? 3) What happened to RB by committee? Where was Howard? 4) I watched Cutler pretty closely this game and I never noticed some of these things before, but I think I actually saw a pattern today. When things are going well on the offense, Cutler plays well (yeah, chicken and the egg). However, when White stopped on that route, I really get the impression that Cutler turns shitty on his team mates. Maybe not outwardly, but his attitude seems to become surly. He never stops trying and he just keeps stepping up even when he is getting pounded, but I think even though he does not quit, the guys around him seem to. Some dynamic changes. I see him being surly rather than trying to rally and I wonder if it affects the way the guys around him play. I had kind of alluded to this before, but I think for the first time I really saw it. Now, people can see what they want to see, so I am wondering.... did anyone else get the same impression? 5) The offense let the team down. This game was winnable.
You're asking an OL to do WAY to much against that OL when they haven't played a single game together.
That front 7 might well average 4 to 5 sacks per game if Clowney has figured it out.
I'm not condemning the OL. Just saying the OL sometimes blocked well, but often didn't provide the O the blocking needed to do much today. I'm not piling on them. Just saying they couldn't get it done today. I do expect them to get better... I think it is reasonable to believe they will.
They might have gotten tired, the Texans may have made the better adjustments, but definitely the OL played worse in the second half. The whole offense did. They made defensive adjustments and Loggain just laid a log. Did nothing to counter.

Yeah, I don't know. I just rewatched the game. It looks like a team with a lot of new and young players. I just think it's going to take time to ramp up these guys, and the team, this year. The execution on offense was just bad. But I think the team will get better on O and on D. But no sane person is expecting this team to be great this year. It will be better than last year. It should get better with each game this year.
I really didn't expect the team to do as well as it did today. I wasn't pleased. But I sure wasn't shocked either. We'll get better.
20 carries for 73 yards, your starting RB has 3.4 ypc and 2 catches for 6 yards? that's not impressive at all, 1 nice td carry doesn't make up for the lack of production the rest of the game.
Agreed. I've said all along that Langford is not a workhorse back and all the crap I kept hearing from the announcing team about how he gets stronger as the game goes on was bunk. If Fox refuses to alternate his backs during a game we'll see more of this all season long.
I can think of at least a half dozen carries where Langford got stonewalled after 3 yards gained he has no power to break tackles at all so he'll go down on the first hit 9 out of 10 times. If this s what Fox calls going with the hot hand then his definition of hot hand needs to be redefined.
Langford ran today exactly the same way he ran last year. With little or no power to break a tackle. He's not the kind of back who can punish a defense or churn out yardage between the OTs opening the door for play action passing and that was very evident today.
The ratio of TOP between the two teams was shocking and one of my keys to game was that we had to win that TOP battle and we didn't even come close because the running game could not be used to sustain drives yet Loggains and Fox refused to abandon it and throw earlier.
When skill players like White and Langford are getting all the snaps but not producing it looks to me like your more interested in either losing or trying to prove a point that you are in winning when you have other options who are also very good football players. That's poor coaching.

both Bobbie M and Leno got beat by the same guy. I can't remember the texans name but he wasn't Clowney or Watt. He beat both our tackles handley.
and yes, langford and white situations need to be handled by coaches. i would just have white run a fly pattern every down until he made a play or quit. Langford is ankle tackled all the time. Please try someone else for more than one play.
It was Whitney Trag, and he had 12 sacks in the last 13 games last year; and three more in the playoffs. He's the 2nd head in the three headed beast that is the Houston front 7.

It was Mercilus.
The team is trying to restock the O with younger draft picks and I have to agree that today wasn't encouraging. Langford I agree sucks at YAC so far and don't get me started on Kevin White.
The Bears had 2 golden opportunities to score a semi-knockout blow on their way to an upset today and pissed away both of them:
Converting a 4th and inches (on a play every high school team runs) on their 30 could have put us up 14. Scoring, even just 3, coming out of halftime with the ball would have given us at least a 7pt lead on the road in the 3rd. Both would have put all the emotional momentum in our favor. Convert either of those scoring drives, much less both, and I think there's a good chance we come out of there with a W.
Now that that frustration is out of the way, I'll mention a few positives since none of us EXPECTED to win this game.
I think the D looks much better and teams won't be routinely hanging 40+ on us like what was happening a year or two ago. The run D was a little shaky early but settled down and stuffed Lamar Miller all 2nd half. I thought giving up only 2 TDs on the road (one of which was an indefensible great play by a great receiver) was more than respectable. I was particularly pleasantly surprised by the secondary which we all thought was a weak spot and especially so worth Fuller out. They did a solid job and I was expecting Hopkins to torch us. Seems like we have some young, up and coming DBs in the pipeline and that's good to see. The O lost this game, not the D.
Houston is one of the best overall defenses and easily the best pass rush we will face this year. Watt, Clowney, Mercilus, and Wilfork are a fearsome group and thet have pretty solid LBs and DBs too. The O has to get better no doubt but they did face an unusually steep uphill climb today for sure.
If you're gonna lose, a road game against a playoff team from the AFC is probably the least damaging way to do it. Houston should easily win that division again this year.
