I don't think you'd get much for him. He's worth more to us than what we'd get in return. Boy, I'm re-watching the game tonight and the defense looks like it is just mailing it in from the start. Like they're just going through the motions. Nichols looks like he has the fire though.
This and, as BB pointed out, how it impacts our depth especially with Mack sidelined would be the main argument against it. IMHO he's a mid grade starter worth the 3rd round pick it would take to replace him but I don't see anyone giving up a pick that high for him. Lacking that we may as well keep him around for now and get what we can out of him as a player.
Overall Floyd hasn't failed. He's simply failed as an impact edge rusher because he never was one to begin with. He had just 17 sacks in three seasons at Georgia most coming when he was lined up as an off the ball ILB just like Roquan Smith. If he did get one as a pure edge rusher it was because college OTs couldn't handle his speed and ability to "bend" around the edge but at 230lbs once they could engage with their hands and lock him up he was neutralized.
That hasn't changed. Despite his having gained 20lbs he still lacks the strength to bull rush or convert speed to power as Mack and Lynch can do so all an OT has to do his take the edge away from him and he can't get home or just get their hands into him and stonewall him. He lacks power and he lacks an array of moves to get him to the QB and if by now that hasn't changed IMHO it's not going to. Added to that is his regression as a pass rusher which is disturbing.
Pace needed an OLB/Edge Rusher and was sold on Floyd's athleticism and "bend" so much so that he overlooked Floyd's lack of college production as a consistent pass rusher. We drafted another undersized SEC "Tweener" thinking we could convert him into a dominant edge rusher and like so many others before us who've drafted similar types we failed just as they did. This should be a lesson learned and why we needed to pass on Trumaine Edmunds this past draft.
Floyd hasn't been a wasted pick he's just not who Pace believed he could be and it shows. If Floyd eventually ends up playing OLB in a 4-3 scheme or an off-the-ball ILB in a 3-4 where he can be kept clean and pursue playing the run and drop into coverage he'll likely be better off but I don't believe he'll ever be more than mid grade starter. I just don't see the drive or hunger to overcome his weaknesses and become the best. If it hasn't happened yet it probably never will.
