The only thing to do is hang on to him and hope he figures it out by year 5. I don't have much faith in that happening, but we traded up to get him.
Why Franchise tag him? Either sign him to a long term deal or let him go. His price will only go up from there and we have Trubisky contract to worry about during his 5th year FT if done.

He is a 1st round pick, they just pick up his 5th year option.

Having Mack on the team is not only good for our D stats. He is also a learning tool that the rooks can use.
We have read that Hicks has been helping Nichols. I imagine that Travathon, Lynch and Mack has been helping Smith as well as Floyd. It could be that he is being used a bit different then last year because of depth. His had has the paw issue to deal with. Maybe he has learned a few techniques from the vets I mentioned above that has been a bit of a conflicting issue, ie using old vs new. A combination of both.
We know that Fang wanted Floyd because of his comparisons to Aldon Smith. Maybe they all are trying to mold him into that player and he is just reacting as such, A bit overwhelmed.
I imagine someone like butkus3595 who has been around players like these above have heard the trials and tribulations of changes in scheme for these types. Last year we wanted him as a rusher. Now it seems he is a drop back cover guy. Or maybe we are showing that only to surprise a few teams later on.

Floyd is not terrible. he's an average starter. his rush is weak as he doesn't show the flexibility to win the edge and plays weak. he might get stronger at the point, but he hasn't improved at all in terms of on field awareness which could be a function of overwhelmed/ just doing what you've been told. today the jets picked up a third and long because he didn't drop out of a rush when the receiver set presnap and OL action after snap totally gave away they were going with a wr screen. if he reads that, he is in the passing lane and if the QB still throws he has a chance at an int.
in a game where trevathan repeatedly demonstrates his skill as ilb in Vic's scheme by showing up all over the field, where Smith gets it in 7 games and Jackson is less than 2 years in and already captain material for the D i am fine with putting floyd in the "just a guy" category for good. he has some decent mesurables that could make him a force but so did former ILB Anderson.
If we can get a 1st or 2nd for him. I pull the trigger. We already got a franchise pass rusher in Mack. Floyd really isn't that good of a pass rusher and if some desperate team is willing to give up a lot for him then let's do it.
There really is no excuse in his regressing play he had this year. Not when you got a guy like Mack taking double and even triple blockers and leaving Floyd one on one...
