Whether it should or shouldn't count the way it does doesn't change the fact that it changes the draft profile and stock of each player, same w/private workouts.
+1 I just figure it's nice that a guy can record a good number in the various things, and wow people. We also see guys who can't catch a football or block or tackle worth crap. Cornelius Washington is one guy who comes to mind... maybe he isn't the best example but he is one I remember at the Combine. He maxed every combine "measureable" across the board. The guy is a physical freak. LOL, if you went by the Combine numbers you'd think we had a future Hall of Fame draftee. But we haven't seen that translate into football play. But the kid can jump high and run fast.

I really hate that we don't have a pool jump competition at the combine. It's really hard to tell how they are going to transition to the NFL without that.
I don't think the players should have as much time leading up to the combine. The players training specifically for the combine drills is not helping teams evaluate their talent. It makes it more misleading.
Truth be told...from my end...it's not a lot of time. A lot of guys are just starting to get to their training facilities...leaving realistically 4 weeks to train these guys in a grueling fashion right after their seasons without hurting them, and thats if they aren't participating in any all start games. It's a high stress time.
I honestly don't think they should need to train specifically for the combine though. Those combine events to not transfer to the NFL all that well in my opinion. It shows how athletic a guy is but that's about it. I'd rather see their natural talents that carry over from the college season instead of a guy that has been focusing solely on combine events to train for. That guy that has spent a month on working on his vertical jump and 40 yard dash is not going to be able to offer those same results in an NFL season. Like I said, misleading.
I would be more impressed with a guy that runs a 4.4 40 three weeks after their season compared to a guy that ran a 4.3 40 almost two months later. To me that shows a more accurate representation of a guys natural talents.

I thought it might be more entertaining if we had a singing competition too. We could probably draft a great singer with that #3 pick in the first round. We also need to remember to draft kids with long arms and big hand size too. I still remember how guys were talking about Cody Whitehair's arms being too short... here's the blurb on him after the Almighty Combine arm measurement on him:
LINK "WEAKNESSES Arm length is below average for interior lineman"
Gotta check all of the "measurable" boxes you know :-)

Yes and no. If you had a test that meant a lot, you would study your balls off for it...wouldn't you? This is no different than any other profession really. When I worked on Wall St, before I started I had a lot of time to prepare for my series 7...they didn't just give it to me right out of college.
Some of the events are valuable and highlight different skills. Further, unless pharmaceutically aided a player will only perform up to what their genetic potential allows, you are seeing their "natural" talent. The gains in speed, explosion, and change of direction don't magically disappear however once the combine is over however....so whatever gains they've made during that training is beneficial. If you're TRULY interested in their football skills and their "natural" talent, none of this is needed...all you need to do is actually watch them play the game.
