You understand you contradict yourself right? You say it wasn't only about upside, but that Smith had more upside. I'm not saying upside was the only factor being considered...but it was the DETERMINING factor for the 9ers picking Smith over Rodgers. Upside will get you fired.
lol... upside is code for he can't do it yet. Problem is that many people don't get that also means he may never be able to do it.
Smith was more ready and has had some more upside... If all things are equal, I take the guy with more Upside and that would be Trubisky.
How was Smith more ready? Please explain. Further...are you implying that Trubisky, with one year as a starter is just as ready as Watson? Are you implying that a guy who has been a heisman finalist, and brought his team to two national championship games, winning one, and has gotten better every year...less ready? If you are...thats laughable.
No, but Trub offers a lot other stuff and has shown a tendency of being good. Watson has flaws and I think he won't end up in the Top5

What "other stuff". He's played 1 full season...what "tendency of being good"? What flaws does Watson have that Trubisky doesn't? You speak in generalities...start brining some specifics please...if you can.
The hype machine is not even in full swing yet. Let the combine happen and then you can get a better bead on who the talking heads will anoint with their choice of top 5 picks. Watson definitely has the potential (and I would say probability) of going in the top 5. Or no QBs will be taken in the top 5. I can't pretend to know. But when the hype machine is fully geared up and everyone is telling us who is the best, then most of those will also get the teams attention (even though they scout their own). The combine and college games will be a huge factor in this as they always are.

The Combine records a bunch of "measurables" and the sports media people do change opinions and players get hyped. As the years go by, I value a players actual performance in football games more than his performance at the Combine. The Bears need solid football players more than they need Combine performers - and the two are not the same.
How many times in recent years have we seen guys off the charts with "measurables" at the Combine, end up as disappointments? No more "pool jumpers" for me. Let's get guys who can play football. Especially guys who have proven themselves in real football games against great competition... and in big games too.

The way I train guys for the combine is way different than I train them for the season...I can tell you that.
Whether it should or shouldn't count the way it does doesn't change the fact that it changes the draft profile and stock of each player, same w/private workouts.

I totally agree, but the combine and measurables is still what drives the hype machine
I don't think the players should have as much time leading up to the combine. The players training specifically for the combine drills is not helping teams evaluate their talent. It makes it more misleading.

Truth be told...from my end...it's not a lot of time. A lot of guys are just starting to get to their training facilities...leaving realistically 4 weeks to train these guys in a grueling fashion right after their seasons without hurting them, and thats if they aren't participating in any all start games. It's a high stress time.
