I'm quite OK with that despite what Ric thinks. Neither Cutler or the team is reaching it's full potential with him but that's never been all his fault. He was winning well enough until the upheaval five years ago and since then we haven't won much no matter who plays QB. He could use a new start. My only requirement is to not be handed anymore of this crap about stepping back in order to move forward which will be the excuse next year if we draft and play a rookie QB. Since we already know neither Hoyer or Barkley are starting material I'm open to suggestions as to who would be.
I've made one proposal which few seem to support so let's hear some other options. It's not like there's QB tree out bearing bushels of ripe and ready QB fruit so lay some other options out y'all. Ones that at least have some chance of coming true and actually working.
Personally I think NE would be fools to trade Garoppolo but Belicheat is so confident in his systems I'm sure he feels that given a couple of years he can fit any QB into team and win. Whose to say he can't because he did it with a 6th round pick few other teams wanted.
As far as Watson goes this would cause me concern enough to not spend that top pick on him. First of all and arm like Garcia's would be a poor fit for an outdoor NFCN team. That's what we have now in Barkley and Hoyer.
Pro Comparison: Jeff Garcia
Garcia was a CFL star before coming to the NFL. It became obvious quickly that he wasn’t going to win games with arm strength. His advantages lay in his scrambling ability, leadership and mental toughness. Garcia was a four-time Pro Bowler but much of that depended heavily on where he ended up playing. The team and coaching staff will be hugely important in Watson’s success or failure.
Projection: Middle 1st to early 2nd round
I don't want to pretend like we ruined Jay Cutler but he was never developed or his best interests served playing for the Bears. So drafting a QB who would be just as dependent on location and in need of the proper coaching staff to develop him would likely end in another failure if he was drafted by this regime.
I can only repeat the fact that John Fox and his staff have never successfully developed an NFL QB of even moderate success. He prefers vet with at least some experience which is why IMHO someone like Garoppolo is a better option. He's also a QB who has NFL arm strength and has played his entire career in the north not the south.
