Chicago Bears: The cost of trading for a quarterback
by Luis Felipe Saccini21 hours ago
What would it cost the Chicago Bears to trade for a starting quarterback this off-season?
The Chicago Bears 2016 season it’s almost over, and with one game left in the schedule, the Bears stands as the 3rd pick overall in the next NFL Draft. It’s hard to imagine that quarterback Jay Cutler will ever wear blue and Orange again. Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley are impending free agents. With a thin Market at QB on Free Agency, the Bears may look at trading for a new one.
With a quick look you can see two names emerging as top targets: the backup QB for the New England Patriots, Jimmy Garoppolo, and former starting QB for the Dallas Cowboys, Tony Romo.
What would it mean for the Bears trading for one of them?
Let’s start with Romo. He will be traded by the Cowboys, even with Jerry Jones not making it sure. Next Sunday, the Cowboys plan to use Mark Sanchez as a backup QB for rookie sensation Dak Prescott. Why would they incentive Romo if he would stay next season with Dallas? They don’t want Romo to get hurt again.
Romo shouldn’t cost more than a 3rd rounder for the team that acquires him. For the Bears, it would mean to take a veteran QB that might have a few years in the tank for a fair price, but would the Bears get out Cutler’s bad contract to eat Romo’s remaing big deal? That doesn’t seems to be reasonable. To finish with Romo, Jones feelings for him might put the decision of which team to trade with on Romo’s hands, if that’s the case, Romo might choose the Denver Broncos as a new home.
So that leave the Bears the option to trade for high cost Jimmy Garoppolo. The Patriots might ask for him a first rounder, and they should. Picking at 3rd Overall it’s hard to imagine the deal getting done. Fortunately for the Bears, the Pats might find difficult to deal Garoppolo for a first round pick of the 2017 draft. The others suitors might be the Cleveland Browns(1st overall pick and possibly another top 10 pick) , the San Francisco 49ers(2nd Overall pick). You might say the Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets as possibilities, but will the Pats trade Garoppolo within the division?
So, with these difficulties, the Pats might take an offer from the Bears that send them the 2018 1st rounder from Chicago. That would bring the new QB for Chicago and still let the Bears front office with good cap amount for signing free agents and gives new possibilities in the draft. More importantly, give the Bears a chance to draft a play making player, that could become the face of the franchise, such as Jonathan Allen, DE from Alabama with the 3rd overall pick and without having to look for a starting QB also.
