Those same people were wrong on Marriota and Carr and Wentz and Presscott and Wentz in recent years. And I guarantee you'll find at least 2 or 3 good QB's in this draft.
Good? OK, but around here we keep talking about a franchise level passer and none of these guys has proven to be that as of yet.
Carr is leading, or was leading this bunch but he's also in his 3rd year and while good hasn't been a winner either until now. That said I'd love to get a guy like him in the 2nd round like Oakland did.
I like Mariotta too and it is too bad we weren't in a position to draft him. He's done better than many thought he might especially with the Titans. But does this draft have a guy like him? I'd say no it doesn't.
Wentz has come down to earth and like the other two will need more time to develop now hat defenses have caught up to him and Prescott fell into an almost perfect deal for him. We should have drafted him and I wanted to but even so he would not have done as well here. But that aside at least we'd have a young prospect in house who had starting caliber talent.
This is again where I feel the long shadow of John Fox and his disdain for rookie QBs so in all likelihood Prescott would have sat until Barkley did anyway. It's also why I question spending a top 5 pick on a rookie QB who will sit because we have a HC who'll resist him and we have no proven QB coach to develop one other than Loggains. If others aren't scratching their heads too I have to wonder why?
Read an interesting comment on a blog (not a really good blog so I'm not going to post it here) about the value of a 2nd round pick. The commentator made the point that beside trying to figure out if any QBs have a first round grade, a team needs to know if any QBs have a high second round grade.
The problem than becomes (and I'm not going to state this clearly so bear with me) do they pick a player at 1-3 (1st round 3rd pick) who is a reach over a player at 2-3 who also is a reach. In order words if J.Smith (made up QB prospect) is your 15th ranked player do you take him in the first or do you take pass on Smith and take J.Doe who is your 45th ranked prospect high in the second.
If you can trade down to get Smith, than you miss out on the 'once in a generation HOF multiple-year AP/PB' OLB/5-technique DL-man. If you pass on Smith and take Doe than you are missing (potentially) on a player you had a first round grade on (CB/S maybe) that slid out of the first.
Glad I'm not Pace. But its the puzzle he built for himself by not adding a QB prospect in any of his drafts to date.
As in many drafts I feel those high second round picks offer tremendous value which is where Ric and I differ as far as our #3 second round pick having value in a trade for Garoppolo if paired with enough other draft capital to swing a deal.
If anything it's those late 1sts and early 2nds where Belicheat has cleaned up with some good picks so I'm also looking at how he see value not just how I see it. Formerly top ten ranked guys like Jaylon Smith and Myles Jack were there for the taking last year due to injuries and those players could be steals if they recover from those injuries. Eddie Goldman had a 1st round ranking and we got a steal in him if he can stay on the field. Cody Whitehair slid even farther.
So I may view that type of pick much more favorably simply because it can have far less risk and hype associated with it.
If Trubisky carried a high 2nd grade I'd love to take him there and gamble on him but as QB hungry as the NFL has become it ain't gonna happen. This is the primary reason I'll campaign for Garoppolo as long as we have a realistic shot at him and I believe we do. In fact if he's leaving NE I think Chicago may be a place he'd prefer to play no matter how screwed up we may be and at least he brings some decent previous development with him so we don't have to start from scratch.

Well to be fair, these guys are young, Wentz is a rookie, he had to come to earth, the next step is learning to throw a 2nd punch to the defenses. Carr has been clearly a better qb then anything the Bears have had in a while. There is a reason Pace wanted to trade up for MM, there is also a reason TN didn't want anything to do w/Cutler and his moronic contract.

I don't think the second part of that ever got beyond the "well we could trade you Cutler if you like stage". I can't blame Pace for his interest but even he had to know it would take far more than that and other booty.
He would have drafted MM if he had the chance and kept Cutler until he found out what Mariota could do. I've never bought into that part of the story because it's never been realistic to me.
It's also why I'm telling you I don't see anyone with a top ten pick trading it for Garoppolo when a rookie would come cheaper and some of those guys will be a better fit in SF or Cleveland that they might be here. Trubisky is the only real fit I see and with him you have even less to go on than Garoppolo.
You won't like it, half of Chicago won't like it, and Fox won't like it but if I'm the Bears GM and I can't swing a trade or sign a FA vet who I can trust I draft a QB later and keep Cutler for another year. There's actually less risk in that than anything especially if Loggains is staying according to Fox he is.
Man, if you've been watching Mason Rudolph of OSU you've got to be a lil upset the kid decided to return to OSU next year. Kids dangerous. Last night against a damn good CO secondary he went 22/32 for 314 yds and 3TDs. For the season he had a 63.4% comp rate, 4100 yards 28 TDs and only 5 Ints. Dangerous kid. Was hoping we could target him in rds 2-4

I agree, I was really...REALLY...hoping he'd jump into the draft, kid looks legitimate. And it's not like he has a ton of NFL weapons he's throwing to either.
Me too. As early as we are picking, we could have gotten him. He may not have made it into the 2nd though. Next year (yeah.... my fear is we may be looking next year too) he will be a top pick

What QBs are worth watching in today/tonight's games? Any the Bears might be interested in?

Cutler may be let go. I hear he has a canon arm.
I hear Fox and Teddy are already on it doing research

Teddy is pushing hard to sign Kyle Orton. Says he's a bargain free agent with good NFL experience. I'll bet we have to fight Belichick to sign Neckbeard KO though. Belichick is almost as sharp as Teddy.
