This isn't Devin Hester, where you have to just find a way to get the ball in his hands, he's not that level of special. His ceiling is Cordelle Patterson, his floor is you and I talking NFL on message boards. Not sure what Poles/Flus see in him, but it's going to cost the team games before they figure it out, sadly.

I'm 56 with a bad knee and wife who tells me "Please don't hurt yourself playing basketball today" when I go out on Tuesdays to play. So thats a pretty low floor. There are plenty of RBs with his speed who just got cut from teams and are on practice squads. If they really want a 4th running back I'd go with a guy who actually played RB in college and wasn't a WR/KO/PR.

I want to like the guy, I want him to have success but when he muffed the KO I have to admit--I wasn't surprised at all. He's like the Bobby Wade of this team. For you young guys, Wade had like 4 muffed punts in one game. They just kept putting him out there and Wade just kept dropping them.

Carter is the return guy from now on, has to be.

I was so hoping he would prove to be a good player. But you can't trust his hands. I don't think they can fix him in that area. It's a shame because if he did have good hands he'd be a decent player. But yeah, I don't want to see him fielding kicks anymore.

STOCK UP

Pass rush/DL: Was a big worry for all of us but they took a big step forward week 1. Taylor, Sweat, Dexter, Billings, and Walker were all very good and kept the heat on Levis in the 2nd half when they had to get stops
Secondary: We all thought they would be good and it looks like they will be. Other than a few bad plays, coverage was tight and got 2 INTs (easily could have been 4). Levis was pretty flawless until late in the game when he started making mistakes and DBs made him pay.
STs outside of Velus: Santos hit 2 long FGs, punting was great, and Carter is a solid return man. Coverage on kicks was also very good.
Flus: Flus actually made some halftime adjustments on defense and they shut down the Tennessee O after giving up 2 a couple of not so good scoring drives in the 1st half. I'll give Flus credit cuz that was our only shot to win the game with the O sucking.

STOCK DOWN

Velus: I'm done with the Velus experiment and I sure hope the coaches are too. He's inactive going forward for me (activate Scott and/or RoJo). The only role left for Velus is an occasional jet sweep or end around. It's time for Poles to admit he missed on this draft pick. Barring injury ahead of him on the depth chart, Velus should be inactive by default.
iOL: I know Tenn has a monster DL but yeash these guys were terrible. It felt like almost every play was blown up before it had a chance to work by pressure right up the middle. I saw Jenkins (yeah he SUCKED badly), Shelton, Davis, and Bates all get wrecked. To me, most of the problems on O were 100% on the iOL getting beat like a drum play after play. Lotta work to do there.
Caleb: Don't care what he said on HK, he was clearly amped up and jittery in the 1st half. He had 2 deep balls that are TDs for him 90% of the time and he overcooked both of them likely due to butterflies. A 3rd TD was dropped by Allen. I'm not worried about him as he had guys in his face way too much but yeah he has to settle down going forward. To his credit, he didn't turn the ball over or it surely would have been an L.

Bears have a lotta work to do on the OL or they are gonna get waxed next weekend in Houston. That's all I am worried about at this point. The D, including DL, looks like they can compete with anyone, not worried about QB-WR misfires at this point, and STs should be above average once you bench Velus.

Figure out the blocking issues cuz that was overwhelmingly why the O was sputtering all game.

I don't like giving the game ball to a whole unit. It always kind of feels like a cop out. So I gave it to Taylor. Guy just showed up a week or so ago and is running around like he knows the defense inside and out. Got to love that.

Offense

- Shelton was so bad I'm not sure if they should give him another chance. Like he individually killed 3 drives. Two sacks and a holding penalty.

- CW didn't play that great but I never sensed he was ever rattled. Mostly he just like he was hurrying too much due to all the other breakdowns which made him miss some throws. He also didn't start trying to play hero ball even when they were down and kept the ball secure.

- I often role my eyes when people blame the OC or the play calling for everything but I don't really understand what Waldron was trying to do out there. Not just play calls but weird personnel decisions. Where was Kmet? Why is Homer in the backfield? Why is 5'9'' Carter the main blocker for a DJ Moore screen? (Contrast that with the screen DJ got big yardage on when Kmet was blocking) What's with all the empty backfields? Abandoning the run so early? And many other questions.

Defense

- Pretty great all around. Got bullied a bit in the run early on. Seemed like there were some gap control issues. That seemed to get sorted though.

- I noticed some were complaining about that Sweat wasn't on the field as much as they wanted but I think the big reason the DL looked better in the 2nd half is the constant rotations. It was pretty obvious toward the end of the game the Titan OL was pretty gassed while or DL was still going full out. Which is saying something given the Titans had the time of possession advantage by 10 mins.

Overall

- The Offense needs to figure out what it wants to do. The D obviously can't be expected to look like that every game. Waldron needs to have a much better gameplan going into the Texans game and do a better job of featuring the right personnel. I don't think they're going to be able to keep Stroud to the same stats they kept Levis.

I'll bet we'll see a lot of things get cleaned up on offense and we will see steady improvement there. Nobody should be surprised that the unit looked rough in the first game. New players on offense, new OC, new playbook, rookie QB, new center and a RG who had not played much with the starting 5 due to injuries. And I mentioned this in another post. Nate Davis really wasn't that bad yesterday. When I went back and watched his plays again, Nate Davis was far from our worst OL on Sunday. The OL can and will play better. It's just stuff that needs to get sorted out on offense.

If I'm honest, I gotta say no. I believe the offense can be better, and maybe much better. But a realistic expectation is probably that Caleb and the offense will get better game-by-game. It will be a process. I don't expect the Bears to win on Sunday night. I hope they win. But Houston just looks a year ahead of them and ascending.

With his quad surgery robbing him of practicing since October of 2023, I have to believe he's not a 2024 help to this team. He missed OTA's, summer camp, preseason games. And it's not like he is from a bigtime program (he went to Yale). He's a high-ceiling prospect that probably needs a year. He was reliable and healthy before the quad injury, so he will hopefully (eventually) be a real stud for us, a 1st round level talent eventually. But he is a long-term investment. Not a 2024 guy.
