You forget about Will Anderson? He's a defensive end who had 7 sacks this season. Other than him, it was a pretty weak edge class, as evidenced by the next defensive end being taken at pick 15 and then not again till pick 28. If you go back to 2022 the edge's drafted in round 1 produced sack totals of: 3.5, 9.5, 4, 2.5, and 6. The next season those guys went for: 10, 11.5, 11.5, 7.5, and 10.5. Of course...that was a VERY GOOD edge class, unlike this past years.
Either way, the Bears aren't trading for Hendrickson, and it has only a little to do with the draft capital you'd have to give up to do it. He'd have a cap hit of $15 mill this season, and the Bears will only have about $10 mill in cap space left this season after they sign their draft class. The math isn't mathing unless they do some restructures or extensions that lower cap hits for this season.
Will Anderson and Jalen Carter were exceptions. I wanted Poles to draft one of them. Anderson was drafted #3 overall and Carter #10. Bears won’t be drafting anywhere close to that high in 2025. The top DEs will be long gone before the Bears are on the clock. I want a Super Bowl ready DE 2025-26.
Jalen Carter isn't included in the list I gave. Just defensive ends. And they weren't exceptions...this is what was expected of them.
There will be around $10 mill after paying rookie contracts, not $12 mill. Who else you cutting after Borom? He'll only save you $3 mill. You've got to come up with another $10 mill somewhere so that the team has cap space to operate during the season while taking on Hendricksons deal. Unless your plan is to go into the season with the cap space at $0.
