You don't trade up for non high value positions unless you are that position away from a sb. wasted future capital for a non value position is peak meatball.
So give up on a potential Hall of Fame WR to draft an average pass rushers?
All situations are different. If you know we ain't going to be this high up again and all it might cost us is one of our 2nd round picks.
Harrison Jr isn't going pass 5 and Nabers isn't going pass 6. I'm willing to make a trade for one of them and have an elite WR for years to come.
Harrison Jr has a super high floor. Nabers has a higher ceiling.
Rome I would consider a 7th and would trade up to 8th if needed.
With all due respect, not the same thing as what we are talking about with MHJ.
We'll see.
No, there's nothing to see. No one is guaranteeing a certain result -- you can never do that. The greatest prospect can bust and the worst can succeed.
We are talking about what is known about these guys at draft day and the range of likely outcomes from that. And at draft day MHJ >>> Bateman or JSN.
In other words, MHJ has a much higher floor and much higher ceiling.

Some of what we are talking about here is going past each other. I see your point, and for the most part agree. But what frustrates me with the draft and how we think about the draft is different from what it should be. I'll abandon the conversation for now.

All of them are potential average or hof talent. 0.0% of projection means anything. You don't win SB's b/c of RB's and WR's. You win at qb, OL and Pass Rusher. You win SB's w/good everything else. You sure to hell don't lose draft capital, ie potential future HOF talent, what is found outside of the first round also, for them; unless, again, you are that piece away from a SB run.
The Bears are not a WR away from a SB run. They aren't a WR away from a strong playoff run. Hell whatever rookie WR they bring in won't even be their primary WR and won't be in the next several years as Moore isn't old, he's here awhile. Allen is here for another few years also, and You have Kmet still as a target, and Swift out of the RB position. Only so many balls and the #5-9 pick is going to want more then they'll get.
Plenty of goodWR's to be had over in day 2, AND good to special WR's in the next several years. Stay at 9, or trade back. Get whoever you want at any position you feel needs to be filled. Losing future draft capital is what killed us in past trades for Cutler and Mack, and Mitch, and you want to do it for a WR? You've learned nothing.
CHGO had someone on talk about a trade up, but it involved Alt, that makes more sense then a WR. Stud "guaranteed HOF" lol gold medal platitude stuff LT. Ya if they traded up for him I wouldn't be happy, but at least it'd make sense. 10yr bookend potential all pro OT's for your rookie QB, I get it.

The Bears are not a OL or pass rusher away either. If one guy is a Tier 1 and the other guy is a Tier 2. You don't take a Tier 2 guy because its at a more "premium" position. That's the point I'm getting at.
If you have a Calvin Johnson in this draft class but rather go after Montez Sweat because of the positional value. One is a hall of fame WR while the other isn't even a top 10 at his position.
There are 5 Tier 1 guys in this draft. Can't miss prospects.
Williams (QB) Alt (OT) Harrison Jr (WR) Nabers (WR) Odunze (WR)
The other guys are Tier 2 guys. I understand you can get decent to good WRs at day 2 but what are the chances they live up to these prospects? We also have a need at WR and a new starting one when Allen leaves next year. What's not better than pairing your young QB with a young WR for the next 10+ years?
Allen got better the year he got a #1 WR. Joe got better when Chase came to the Bengal's. Can't deny the impact a #1 WR is. Would Mahomes be good without his star receiving TE? Would Brady be as good without his star receiving TE? Draft picks are just picks at the end of the day. Rams haven't had any firsts in years and are still a competitive team. I'm not saying we give up a 1st round pick since those are day one starters no matter when you put them. 2nd round picks are a bit different but I'm more willing to give them out. We got Sweat for a 2nd round pick. That was good value in return.
Everyone says we have a horrible history with QBs but our WR history is even worse. Our best WR is Alshon Jeffery and he's just an good #2 WR during his prime. Grabbing one of the best prospects like Harrison Jr would change things up far more than an average pass rusher.

WR history for chicago isn't near as bad as the qb, i cannot take you seriously w/poorly thought out things like this.

Sid Luckman Jay Cutler
Outside of Brandon Marshall. Was there any good WR here that was a legit top 10 talent?

I heard yesterday, for the first time, that there are some character/maturity issues that need to be vetted regarding Nabers. They said it may not amount to anything, but it is something that needs to be checked out (and I'm 100% sure the Bears have done this already). But if there is anything there, then we may see the guy drop a bit - not much, if any, due to some teams taking a guy regardless of maturity/character red flags.

I voted to not trade up. Based on what I've read watched and listened to, it really sounds like at least 3 QBs will be taken in the top 5 picks (maybe top 6). I personally think we have significant needs on the OL, DL and a second #1 type WR would be a huge upgrade for our offense. So, if it looks like Alt and all three WRs will be gone by #9, that means there are still some really solid guys available. What I am saying is I think it is over 50% likely that Williams, Daniels, Maye, MHJ, Nabors and Odunze are all gone by the time #9 rolls around. Outside of those 6, who are the top prospects? Just to throw up a bunch of names, I see Alt, Bowers, Fashanu, Latu, Verse, Newton, etc.
Personally, I think that Alt, Bowers and possibly Fashanu could be worth the #9 pick. I've also seen lots and lots of the pundits raving about how deep the WR talent pool is in this draft class. I've heard that there are 2nd round WR prospects in the 2024 draft that would be #1 or potentially tops 10 picks if the current top 3 WRs were not in the draft. And similar statements about WRs who will likely go in the 3rd round.
There is also the less likely chance that all three of the top QBs plus McCarthy are gone with all three of the top WRs. That puts our options at #9 down to a guaranteed Alt or Bowers. I like those odds even better.
I guess I just don't see the advantage of trading up that far as the cost of the 2024 and 2025 picks is too great. Especially if we could have a true set of bookends at OT (and keeping Jones as a swing OT for depth) or possibly add either a solid TE, DT or DE. And keep what few picks we have left.
I feel that with a rookie QB, having a hopefully consistently clean pocket will be critical for his development.
