My heart says trade up and get him, by head says...don't trade up ever. I've heard too much about can't miss WRs recently (Bateman, Pickens, the Seattle guy, and even Scott were highly hyped on this board) and while the jury is still out on those guys they were all (except Scott) described as game/team changing. Maybe MHjr is really the generational can't miss player we all think/hope he is. I'd hate to be the team that traded up to get him and he wasn't.
Uhhhhhh, wait just a minute there.
Pickens was a 2nd round pick who had significant behavioral issues. No serious observer called him "can't miss" or "generational". Bateman was taken ~ #21 IIRC with minimal hype. No serious observer called him "can't miss" or "generational". JSN (the Seattle guy) fell to about the same spot based on injury history and again, while a good prospect, no serious observer called him "can't miss" or "generational".
These guys aren't in the same league as MHJ, who is the consensus #1 non-QB in the draft, has a near-flawless scouting report, and HOF NFL bloodlines.
I'm as stingy as anyone in terms of trading up and even I can see the value there. It's not gonna happen so don't worry about it as he won't fall close enough for Poles to be tempted.
Cardinals are salivating over him, need a WR badly, and are already saying it would take 3 FRPs minimum to move them off #4. If by some miracle they pass, Chargers are taking him for sure.
Just like Joe Alt has a very solid floor at #7, I can't see MHJ getting past 5.

If we get him, then we will have moved forwards two generations. I am going to have to buy a walker

Highlighted my actual phrasing: "...on this board." Can't remember if it was one poster, 2 posters or more, but all those guys were hyped at one point or another as team changing WRs .."on this board." As a result its hard for me to believe any hype about any WR.
As much as I loathe the idea of ever trading up in the 1st except for a QB, yeah if by some miracle MHJ falls to #5 or #6 and you can get him just by giving up one of your 2025 2nds, you gotta make that move.
You would literally be drafting the two best players in this draft within minutes of each other.
Exactly. Seldom do opportunities arise such as this and with the 2025 draft capital that we have, giving a second and possibly a sixth seems like the move to make.
^^^ this ^^^ As I commented on another thread, WR, OT, Edge are where we need to go as after next season, theoretically, we won’t have high draft choices. Grab one of the top 3 WR’s this draft while you can.
I guess my thinking is that if the Bears want to add an elite WR in this draft, there are 3 to choose from (and a number of people believe Nabers is better than Marvin Harrison Jr, and Odunze is very very close to those two - and a GREAT fit for Caleb Williams). Why trade up if you don't have to? It will be fascinating to revisit these three WRs in a few years and see who did, in fact, end up being the best - and who didn't. MHJ may not end up the best... but I get it. He's the hype train guy of the WRs this year. The Bears may view otherwise. We just don't know.
I don't like mortgaging our future when there are going to be elite players available at #9. But, hey, I don't claim to know best here. I've said that many times in the past few weeks. If Poles thinks we need to trade up to get a guy - then maybe that's the best way to go (could be for Alt too).
If we can get one of the three top receivers without giving up draft capital, that would be great. But if it looks like we’re going to have to do so to land one, I’m in for making such a move. Opportunities such as this rarely happen.

David had man-crushes on Bateman and JSN.
With all due respect, not the same thing as what we are talking about with MHJ.

For the record, I think MHJ is much better than Bateman or JSN. I just thought those two were best available at the time. Is it okay for me to say that some people around here have a man-crush on Alt?

I'm just hoping the Bears pull a Texan move and trade back up to get their guy rather than hoping he falls to them. Having two top 10 picks this year. You need two super star players.
We need several expensive players WR, DT, DE and depending on how the line plays, possibly OT and C. I know some are advocating for OT and C now but I consider OT to be an upgrade position and C might be in the same category depending on how Poles coveted C plays. That’s why I have put those lower. We are functional there, but we have no push on D and will only have one Wr again after this year
Yes but OT and WR are really the only two to target since defense this year doesn't have any special players. Go with BPA.
No, I didn't say I didn't want MHJ or Nabors. I'd love to have one of them. And your idea of trading up THIS year when we don't have to move up very much has a lot of merit to it. Plus, I agree with how you think it will go down. Pretty much agree with all you said
This is how I think it will go down, or at least some sort of combination like it. If this happens we could be having a bid off from teams wanting that 3rd QB. It would be hard not to take the offers. A small trade back for OT Troy Fautanu or one of Verse/Turner or even Brian Thomas JR I think would be the best outcome. especially if we an squeeze out a 2nd or 3rd from a QB hungry team. Highly unlikely BUT we know what happens when teams get QB happy and one is sitting at number 9.....number 9.....number 9!! Sorry the song popped in my head lol.
The only way you get a 2nd round pick is from trading from #9 to the mid 20's. At that point is it really worth the 2nd round pick when you passed up on so many players? Remember, if things work out correctly. We won't have a high draft pick going forward. This is the year you go all in. No trade backs. Even trade up if possible. I be ok with us trading up to #5 to get Harrison or Nabers. Got to imagine this is the last time we draft this high. Get the best of the best.
